Quick Transom Question

I have some rot on one side of the outrdive hole on my Wellcraft I/O. I've cut some of the fiberglass out of the inside to expose the wood. The rot is limited to a small area on the lower port side of the outdrive hole. The rotted crap is easy to remove, but the good wood is nearly impossible to remove. Can I just replace the wood in the center of the transom rather than replace the whole thing. If it's possible to replace about a 2 1/2 ft. section in the center, it would save me from having to tear out part of the stringers(which are in good shape). I want the boat to be safe first and foremost, so if this is not a structurally sound way to do it, then I'll do the whole thing. I little advice please. I would not recommend what you are asking. It may work but I would want to fix it right and not worry about it again.

Thanks for the reply. I figure most folks will agree with you, and I'm for doing it right. Just kind of a bummer to have to tear out all that good wood. I'd say there is an area about 1'x1' that is rotten and the rest is so solid that my saw would hardly cut it. Also, It's a shame to cut out good stringers and foam to access the transom. Maybe I could cut the tramsom out above stringer level. What do you think. Once again I want it to be structurally sound. I'm really not even sure to how get the solid wood separated from the outside fiberglass when there is no delamination. I'll get pics tomorrow.

is it possible to cut out the bad wood and replace it. then take another pc and sister it to the orginal cutting around the stringers and out drive?

Agreed with above, pics are needed for sound advice. A chain saw will eat through even the good wood in short order. It really doesn't take that long once to commit to it. I had mine clean and ready in 3 hours. Likely would have taken about four times longer without the chain saw. Maybe a high speed auger bit and a hefty drill? Bah, go to Sears, but a cheezy gas chain saw for $50, get'r done and have a useful chain saw when you are finished.

Looks like your about to get into transom hell. I had a similar issue where only the outer portions of my transom showed rot. After i got into it was rotted far worse than i had ever thought, i ended up replacing the whole damn thing.

I know you have a glass boat, and replacing the transom is a different beast, but no one ever gets into it and thinks oh that isn't as bad as i thought.

Just my two cents, you should probably do the whole thing

Thanks for the advice fellas. I guess I'll do the whole thing. The funny thing is, I fully expected to have a rotten transom and it turned out to be in much better shape then I thought it would be, but I still have to replace it.
