Quick/Unexpected end to the Season.......

Well I was planning on taking the boat out for a nice peaceful sunset cruise & maybe toss a line or two during after dinner Saturday, due to the fact I finally got around to cleaning out the gutters,(wife's been after me for awhile) **guess you can see where this story's going** Well, I was just finishing the last clump of junk & noticed the stand pipe was also blocked. Figured I had to drill out the cheap rivets real quick, take her down & snake them out. I had to lower the ladder to just under the gutter, right on the siding, really, really stupid, esp. without a holder. I went up the ladder drilled the rivets & next thing the feet of the ladder kick out & me & the ladder go straight down 25'. Landed on the ladder on all fours,-knees & hands, never let go of the ladder, way to quick. Broke my right leg just below the knee & have 2 pretty good holes- not cuts- holes,in the lower shin area on both legs. Took about 20 stitches in each to close them. They wanted me to stay in the hospital for a few days due to blood clot's forming with this type of fracture (I gotta give myself 2 shots a day in my stomach for 2 weeks to prevent the clots, nasty, I'm not a needle guy). Anyway, can't put any weight on the right leg for 8-10 weeks. The only way I can even move around is with a 4-leg walker @ about 2' in 20 min.'s. I guess the best thing to come out of this is that I'll have all the time I need to read all the Deck repair/replacement threads on iboats, so when I can get to work on the boat I'll know what I'm doing... Do me a favor if your a seasonal boater, If you kicking the idea around to take your boat out for one more good run before you pack it away, please do it. I wish I could & can't.. Well sorry to bend you ear/(eye's as it were), but just wanted to babble about how stupid I can be. Have a Great Day:D

Thankful your injuries are not worse!

Next time enjoy the boating, and THEN finish the honey-do list :D

We took the boat out last Saturday and got her cleaned up nicely -- 80 or so degrees but with cold water. So, no swimming but enjoyed the day with our swimsuits on knowing Sunday would be too cold for them. Little did we know there'd be frost warnings this morning!

Not sayin' our boating season is over... far from it. Just that the wearing of swimsuits is probably done. Last year, we boated until November 30; a bit longer than normal since the boat was new-to-us. My avatar pic was taken about then.

Will come back here to let you know when our last day is completed.

Take care, we hope you get through it well!

Hey Maxxie,
Maybe you can cut your losses by working out a deal with Gutter Helmet to be their poster boy.

Aw Max- I'm sorry man...
Hope you heal up okay.
That must've really smarted - knees on the ladder - yikes; my legs hurt just thinking about it.
I imagine you must have a pretty stiff /sore back/neck too.
Sorry Guy; Well the boat will keep. I never made it out this year due to repairs and money.
The forum helps.
Wish you a full recovery.
Dang gutters!

Ouch! Hope you have a quick and painless recovery. Next year you'll look back at this event while cruisin' and smile that everything worked out well!! :)

Praying for a speedy recovery, Maxxie. I'll try to get the boat on the water soon, just for you! Do you need me to come north and take you for a ride?

I need a good excuse to get to Cabelas ... got a couple birthday gift certificates to use ... so it could be a twofer! ;):p

I always hammer in 2 old time L shaped lug nut removal irons to brace the ladder when getting up on the roof etc. Or brace it with a riding mower/auto tire when on cement. Takes a little extra time but safety comes first. No need to take risk. A little late for that advice. Hope you get better soon

Re: Quick/Unexpected end to the Season.......

Sorry to hear. I had a ladder slip out from under me this summer when I was painting our deck (raised over a walk-out basement). When the ladder slipped my one leg fell through is and skinned a 2"x3" area of my shin. I'm glad I didn't do as much damage as you did. Unfortunately the ladder crashed through a freshly painted and installed 4x8 sheet of lattice that had taken about a zillion man hours to paint. I told my wife I think I would have rather broken my leg than to have trashed that lattice. You are causing me to rethink that.

Good reminder as I 'll be doing Xmas lights in not too long. It was 113 here last Monday, 60 and raining today, supposed to be 94 on Sunday. Not sure what that all means, but there's my report.

Good luck with the leg Maxxie. Might have saved me an injury with the reminder. Thanks!!

Thanks everyone, at least I can sit in the computer chair for an hour or so before the pain gets to me. I don't take the script drugs anymore, had a hell of a time getting off them after a back injury a few years ago. I think they cause more problems than they solve, (at least for me). There calling for very warm October this year, so I'm keepin' the fingers crossed that I don't need surgery on the knee, I go to see that guy on the 13th. Hey! Thanks again....
