Re: Quick Vaseline question

Sarcastic...No , common sense. Yes, Think about it,ever see Vaseline in the parts store in the wax isle? how about at the boating supply store? didn't think so. so when i reply to some arcane statement about how VASELINE didn't "magically" fix there fading issue,i cant help myself, evidently, the poster didn't use common sense.

Your reply was sarcastic or at least it came across that way. And apparently the OP and I have no common sense since we tried something as a last effort to restore our boats color.

I understand that it is not produced with the "magical boat cleaner" use in mind. However, I have read enough about it that I felt comfortable trying it on my boat. It worked great on the colored parts, not so great on the white. I've seen other people applying it on their white boats and not have problems. So I was simply asking if there was an incorrect way to do it. The OP was essentially asking the same thing. Simple enough question blown up into this big debate. The debate really has no place in this thread anyway. Please take it to another one, so that we can try to get answers to our questions (no matter how dumb they may seem to you). Someone who has used it before, please respond if you have any tips for our situation.

Re: Quick Vaseline question

back on topic I applied it to the colored portions to my boat because its the only part damaged. I will say I tried it on a white portion of my boat and it did nothing. some people are just sitting waiting to crap on your thread so just don't worry about it. The few who insist on flaming the idea have proved their maturity. I think it should be said that this shouldn't be looked at as a miracle cure to your finish but its a quick way to get a good looking boat.

Ive buffed, polished, and waxed but got tired of doing it every couple months. Ive only had the Vaseline on my boat for a few days(letting it sit on there) and it already looks twice as good as anything I've tried. no one is forcing anyone to try this and some could care less if you did but what concerns me is the people on the other side seem to think Armageddon will happen if you apply Vaseline on your boat its your decision in the end.

Maybe Scargo and Marine4003 should wax this guys boat together. The ticket sales to this event might cover the price of a new boat for him!

Re: Quick Vaseline question

I have used Vasoline on my old boat. The interior side panels and engine cover/cowl are a textured fiberglass. I don't think wax would work at all. The Vasoline did a great job restoring the blue color back and also made the dashboard look like new again.
There was one problem. The Wife and I went to the local Wally World to pick up some beer for a BBQ and Vasoline for the boat. We almost made it to the checkout when she turns to me and says, "We have to buy some other stuff, I am not going through the checkstand with just beer and Vasoline in my cart!":D

Re: Quick Vaseline question

I have to report back my results, after all the conversations on whether Vaseline will work. I have it on for over a week, in 90 degree days.

On the Transom, it took the dull out of the red and brought back a nice look...but I believe it was only on surfarce dulling.

On the sides, (where I really need attention as I took the "CHAPARRAL" letters off and a very noticeable difference with 20 years of oxidation vs zero exposure under the letters)....it didn't make much difference. It brought the whole surface to a shine when looking at an angle, but straight on, you can easily still see the "CHAPPARAL". :(

So I borrowed my best friends buffer, I'm armed with liquid polising compund, and I'm ready to cut. I used to work for Car Dealers in the detailing dept. in high school, buffing tradeins so they're resellable on the lot. Should come back to me. I'll report back how it worked.

Re: Quick Vaseline question

If you don't like your whites turning yellow maybe try "Aquaphor" same texture but clear instead of yellow. As for me I'll use wax and a buffing wheel on my boat in the garage on some weekend when its raining. Leave the Grease for the wheel bearings, and the Vaseline or Aquaphor for my sons diaper rash!

Re: Quick Vaseline question

Another update.

So I buffed very hard on the sides with Polishing Compound, and then with Rubbing Compound. It took a little red paint off, but it didn't make a difference between where the letters came off and the 20 years of fading.

Now what ?

Is it time to buy sandpaper, and wet sand ?

Re: Quick Vaseline question

You won't get UV yellowed gelcoat white again. It will get lighter if you wet sand (try 800grit followed by 1000). The yellow is a chemical reaction from UV exposure, not dirtiness. Follow it up with some meguires or 3m compound, then polish, then wax and you should not notice the sticker near as much, but you'll never get it to match that white without paint or fresh gelcoat.

On a humorous note..

I have heard the Vaseline trick gets a bad rap because it is too thick and people tend to layer it on too much. To ease the application, try mixing it 2:1 with KY Jelly :p (couldn't resist)

I should have clarified. Where the stickers were, is the top half of the hull....RED. The bottom is white, turning yellow, now a bit whiter after buffing.
BUT,
The red half showed almost no difference after buffing it pretty hard.
This is where I meant to wet sand now ?

Why dont you have some new stickers made, then you will not notice the change.
