82 18' cobalt 228 mercruser, Every time we fix this boat a unrelated problem pops up! The throttle only button has locked the boat in neutral, I rave read posts that mention a rebuld kit(some say waist of time) but have not found kit anywhere online. How do I determine the model of the controls? Are they worth fixing? marina said $400 for new box and differant cables. is this high?

Re: quicksilver controls

they are correct, you have to upgrade to the newest box and the new style cables, merc has made all the old stuff NLA...cant even get parts for most of the older control boxes.

Re: quicksilver controls

I don't know which control you have, but generally you have two control arms in there. One controls the throttle the other the shift. Under normal operating conditions they are coupled together and operate as a single unit. When you push the throttle only button (moves a shaft or ball or something) the two arms are uncoupled the throttle arm moves while the shift arm stays in place in neutral (also keeping the neutral safety switch closed). It may very well be that the button is just sticking or a sprng is weak and is in need of cleaning and lubrication. You could try removing the cover and take a look. Can't hurt too much. Good luck.

Should have said we have it apart, it apears that the pin that locks the shift arm is sheered off, or maybe just galded up on the end. and the button stuck in I assume there is a spring behind the button inside the splined handle mount shaft. not sure how to get it apart with out breaking the red plastic cap on the back side, but If I cant get parts is it worth trying?
