You can top off the gear lube monitor by just removing the cap and topping off. You need to use what is alread in there. Don't use something different.

and find out why it's low, where the oil's gone.... Pull the drive, you might find it all in the bellows.

The best thing to do since it's new to you is to remove the drive, check the bellows for gear lube, drain the drive and pressure check it, and empty the reservoir and line.
If no leaks found in the pressure test, refill the drive per the manual with Hi Performance gear lube, top off the reservoir, and go boating.

6 nuts on the drive plus two on the trim rams...

Check for leaks. replace the gaskets/"O" rings, and you're in business....

It's a new boat to him... He doesn't know what oil is currently in there... and he has no service history... Pulling the leg and even just looking inside would be the very LEAST I would be doing!!!

What I would be doing with a 4 year old engine I have no clue on the history of would be:-

Engine oil and filter change
Fuel filter change
Pull the leg and check the alignment
Visually inspect all the bellows (while the leg is off so I could look inside the uni bellows)
Check engine alignment
Drain leg oil, split leg and check water pump impeller
Fill leg with High Performance Gear lube

That's where I would be starting... Take it from there if I find any problems.... The last place you want to find out the deal wasn't so sweet is half way across some deserted stretch of ocean, with big greenies curling up behind you.

I bought the boat from a Dealer in FL back in January, and he told me that there mercury mechanic look checked it out before I bought it and all looked good was what I was told. I'm not sure what all he would have checked but if it was leaking are anything like that he would have seen it don't ya'll think?

Re: Quicksilver Gear Lube? Please Advise

Yes and no.... Use it for the engine basics, and most of the bolt-ons.

Use this for the TKS (carb) system -> https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B1TAvwZ3TjhfczRQdjBnQThqYjg

If the drive was leaking from the front seal, no a mechanic will not have seen it unless he removed the drive... Anybody selling a boat is not going to tell you what's wrong with it, especially a dealer!

Some here(myself included) probably "suffer" varying degrees of mechanical OCD concerning not only boating, but virtually any other hobby/"toy".

Yeah, you could just "fill 'er up" and chances are you'd be fine. BUT...obviously it's low for a reason.

I'm relatively new to this boat maintenance thing also, but have learned that taking the advice of most of the seasoned "salts" here is well worth it.

Its npt really low just a little below the add line not bad at all. We got a big weekend plan coming up so I might wait on doing all the Drive and Bellows work till we get back... I don't want to mess nothing up haha... But ya'll wouldn't suggest me add some gear oil to whats in there already? bottom line...

If it's a green color, it's Hi Perfomance gear lube, if not, it's impossible to say what it is.
Go boating, but don't mix the oils. If it gets lower, you have a problem, if it doesn't it probably doesn't leak and was just never filled up.

Well a boat is fun to use if you can trust it and concentrate on having fun. All these intense maintenance recommendations are made to save you money later and allow you to enjoy it to the max. You can't have fun if your worried about the boat breaking and you spend a lot of money quick if you neglect maintenance issues. Run it till it breaks is not the way to go. Can you fill it with oil and go boating? Yes. Will you worry about it everytime you go out? Yes. If whatever is leaking now fails will it cost you more to fix it? Yes. Take great care of a boat and it will give you great service. Try to skimp on maintenance and it will be expensive and unenjoyable.
