QuickSIlver Throttle Repair - Neutral Button

Good Day, <br />New to the forum and ready to start with a question already!<br /><br />I have 2 boats with the same problem. 1984 277 Regal Commadore and a 1986 Regal Ambassador. <br /><br />They both have Quicksilver consoles. One is Single engine the other is dual. <br /><br />The Neutral button is very difficult to engage, thus starting the boat with the ability to give it gas without engaging into gear is causing me major grief. <br />Does anyone have any information or possibly an exploded view of how this thing works? The only thing I've been able to do so far is get the cover off! <br />Estimate to have the dual console replaced is 2500$ Really don't want to go there. <br /><br />Thanks in advance!

Probably a Dumb Question,...... <br />But,........<br />Have you tried Spraying Lube around the Buttons,..???<br /><br />There are Several Different Merc. Controlers out there,.....<br />Which 1 do You have,..????...<br />

Estimate to have the dual console replaced is 2500$ Really don't want to go there.

I take it, You're Not doing Any of the Work Yourself,..???....<br /><br />At $2500.00,.... I'd Think that Includes New Cables,+ Everything related to the Controler,......<br />At That Price,...... There Otta be a Lobstah Dinner in there Too....... <br /><br />BTW,....... Welcome to the Forums here at iboats.com.........<br /><br />Where abouts in Maine do you call Home,..???...<br />I was born,+ raised in Old Town,+ Still have Family there,... there is a button kit for the controls, usually by the time they fail altogether a throttle drum will be needed as well. takes me about 4 hours on the average kit installation, depends on access to the control box.<br /> its not hard just takes time and patience. the service manual helps as well.<br /> but its a well known issue with the quicksilver controls that goes all the way up to the commander 3000 series when they finally changed it.

Thanks Bondo and Rodbolt. <br />Bondo, I'm from the big city of Portland. Keep the boats on Sebago Lake. Yes, I tried some WD40 but no luck. At present, I'm going to try and tackle it myself. ChaChing!!!! Ohyeah that price should include a seafood platter and the lobster!! <br />I guess what I really need do is find the Model #s, Part/Kit #s and the service manuals(Which i haven't been able locate). I'm sure once i do one of the boats, the second will go much smoother! <br />Rodbolt, is there an actual name for the kits you described.

there is a name but I cant remember it. most the time anymore the box gets replaced due to the fact the labor alone is almost the cost of the box.<br /> but I still do the odd one, havent done one in almost a year.<br /> study the exploded diagram in the service manual carefully before dissasembling the box.

Thanks Rodbolt! Now all I have to do is find a service manual! I figure if it's going to need to be replaced, why not give it a shot myself. Besides, it gets me onto the boat before the season starts. Suffering from the wrong Cabin Fever!

I guess what I really need do is find the Model #s, Part/Kit #s and the service manuals(Which i haven't been able locate).

Have you checked with your local Mercruiser dealer? They can get those items for you.<br />If you had a picture of the controls you have, that would help. There isn't any part numbers on them for identifiying them.

The part runs less than $10, the labor runs $150 for me.<br />It's a pain, greasy and the head of the screws strip out, grrrrrrrr.<br /><br />BUT, it's cheaper than buying a new mercury box. They don't make one to fit your cables anymore. You get to buy a box AND cables.

boatwizard<br /> I agree, the kit is 12 something and the drum,if needed, is 20 something but the labor can be staggering.<br /> however a mid level guy with enough sense to chew gum and walk can fix it.<br /> its not hard just a pain and usually some blood loss is involved.<br />if the box is on the bench I can do it in less than an hour. the rest is box acess

Burntron,Ive owned practically the same 2 Regals and the Ambassador had the same shifter that I was sidefisting to get the button depressed until my right hand was too bruised to continue.The Commodore already had the shifters replaced with a different type.I dont recommend trying to repair.I had a very good tech take the shifter off and disassemble as if he were fixing a fine watch.A few hours later after reassembly and adding a few new parts and cleaning and relubing....not fixed.He took a used one that he had and just replaced it .They are known for that particular breakdown.

Are there any Internet locations that you know of that might have the diagrams? (I'll try to post a pick.)<br />Don S: I'll try to get a pick! I was in Alaska a couple of years back. That place is beautiful!<br />Boat Wizard and Rodbolt: Thanks, chew gum, walk, talk..., I've done that before with success! Now, if I can just get through the Blood! <g> <br /> Boating season in Maine is just around the corner and I'd really like to get these things done. Nothing worse than having problems when your out! I'll try to get some picks and see if that helps futher my investigation! THanks again to all and hoping for a great boating season for everyone!

That is a Commander 2000 series control.<br />Here is a link to the service manual for that control. Let me know when you get it downloaded so I can take it off my server. I don't have enough space for it!!!!<br /><br /><br /> Section 7

yep, thats the beasts.<br /> not hard, you will most likly crack the plastic trim on the box. no worries, pay close attention to how the trim wires are wrapped around the control handle shaft.<br /> you will most likely find the tapered pin and the ball have worn a groove in the throttle drum.<br /> take notes while dissasembling and it makes reassembly eaisier. the first time you open up the box it can be a bit intimidating.

It's getting warmer now and the threat of snow seems to have diminished.
