QuickStart Feature

I have a 93 johnson 225 and I was wondering how do I know if I have the QuickStart feature on this motor. If I do, what controls it. My motor takes about 5-6 cranks before it fires up when its cold after that no problems at all. Engine model is J225PXETA.

It has Quick Start. The cold start proceedure that I use is --<br /><br />1- Pump the bulb.<br />2- Turn the key to "On". DO NOT engage the starter.<br />3- Press the key in to prime the motor and hold it in for an 8 count.<br />4- Turn the key to "Start"<br /><br />The motor should fire up almost instantly. You shouldnt have to advance the throttle. You may have to tap the primer a couple of times as it warms up the first time of the day.

OK, well now that I know it has QuickStart what controls it. I know it not working because like I said it take it about5-6 cranks of the motor for it to start and sometimes it even worse takes longer.

Its controlled by the pack and stator. However, if its not being primed properly it will still be hard to start.

Well ive primed it every wicth way possible. The primer works perfect with the key and by hand. Also since you said the the stator is part of it, on the bottom of the stator it looks like the is some melted brown liquid looks like it came off the stator coils is this a concern.

Have you primed it as described? Without turning it over?<br /><br />The melted stator is a concern but you may have 2 separate issues.

All QS does is increase the rpms. It has nothing to do with priming the motor.

the quick start feature is powered by the power coil at the front of the stator by the two orange black wires from the stator to the pack, its controled by a start signal on the yellow/red wire from the solinoid to the pack and the white/blck wire from the switch on the port head, if any are defective/out of spec the system may not work properly. its designed to advance the ign timing to 10*BTDC if engine temp is below a specified temp as "seen" by the port switch.<br /> so with a 12v start signal coupled with an open circuit on the temp switch white/black it sends it into quickstart timing advance until the white/blk circuit closes. the feature will(supposed to anyway) cancel at RPM's above 1100.<br /> when it starts cold the idle should remain in the 1100-1200 range and drop back to the 750 RPM range in 30 seconds or so depending on head temp.<br /> but do try the method Dhadley mentions, the procedure to test the quick start is in the manual, the stator goo may be a seperate issue and most likly is.<br /> are all the outer flywheel magnets tight and evenly spaced ?

yes I have primed the way you discribed above Dhadley. As far as the magnet Ill have to check on that tomorrow. If the quickstart is not working is that why its hard to start the motor when its cold. Is the stator goo something to worry about if the engine is running fine.
