The smaller 'twins' from Evinrude or Johnson are my preference. They are quiet, dependable and portable. They are simple to work on, parts are readily available, and a joy to operate. When properly maintained, they will probably out live you. There are literally thousands of these motors in use today and not hard to find. Recently I was fortunate to find a 1971 Evinrude 4hp that looked like it had 10 hours on it. I rebuilt the carb, replaced the water pump and changed the lower unit lube etc.. I pulled the flywheel to inspect the ignition system and found factory everything, the points, and coils were immaculate. Needless to say , it popped instantly in the test tank and idled like a dream. The 4's weigh in at about 32-34 lbs depending on which lower unit you have (weedless or straight drive etc).

I own :

1971 Evinrude 4hp -straight gearcase
1976 Evinrude 4hp -weedless gearcase
1984 Johnson 6hp
1979 Evinrude 15hp

All are excellent runners. Good Luck on finding one of these little gems.

Re: Quiet, dependable ,portable

Well, you mentioned that you were looking for a small portable motor at 60lbs or less. This just about tops out around the 8hp mark. The 15hp '79 goes at about 78 lbs. Most of the noise is contained in the lower leg and the exhaust goes out through the underwater prop. Some of the older models have larger idle relief 'holes' or ports at the water line to relieve back pressure at idle and might be just a little more noticeable but certainly not objectionable.

What to look for?? That covers a lot, but a general rule is to look carefully at the motor as a whole. Be suspect of cheesy paint jobs, they can be an attempt to cover up past abuse. Look at the condition of the prop. Bent and badly dinged props can point to lower unit and drive train problems. Look for missing bolts etc. Remove the cover and inspect the powerhead. Look for signs of blistered paint near the spark plugs, this indicates an overheat condition at one time leading to scored cylinder walls and fractured rings. Look to see if the motor is loosing it's vital fluids, gas from the carb, lower unit leaking lube etc.

The best case scenario is to pull the plugs and do a compression test and ideally go for a boat ride. Check the lower unit lube for water intrusion, usually bad seals or leaking fill screw washers (lube will look like a white milk shake) If you're new to the motor thing, you might consider having a marine tech. look at the motor and give you his opinion. The bucks you spend are well worth it. It's not uncommon to figure spending another 150.00 in parts to replace the plugs, points, coils, condensers, wires, seals, water pump impeller etc. to put a motor back into good shape.

I agree with X, RBF.

In your position I would look for a 3 or 4hp JohnnyRude if I could do without gearshift, and a 5.5 to 8hp if I wanted to shift gears and was willing to haul an additional 20-30lb around.

I would look for 1965 or later, just so I could use a 50:1 mix.

As X says, there are thousands of them around and almost any would be worth an overhaul, water pump and carb-fuel pump overhaul, if needed. Most of them wont need it.

Good luck. :)

thanks- and what you said about spending $150 to bring it up to good shape reminds me of what my dad used to do- he's offer a seller less than they were asking, saying that was what it would ususlly cost to bring it up to the condition they said it was in!Makes sense to do that though, and $150 isn't too much to spend especially if it buys you insurance.

Re: Quiet, dependable ,portable

it'll all depend if I go for the jon boat, or the squareback canoe.I may have a line on an 18'squareback Grumman, which would limit me to the 4to 6 hp range, or 8 or 10 for the jonboat. I;m planning a trip to the Smith river on the BC Yukon border to see if we can find an accomodating young bull moose[ no trophy's need apply]- I'm after a 3-4 year old eating bull, besides those suckers weigh about a ton- not for this boy, thanks.I understand the river widens out and flows more slowly, but at the narrow places it could run 3-4 knots, so I;ll need to factor that in when choosing an outboard.

try the briggs and stratton outboard. It works great and uses little gas, but it is a little noisy.
-BIll

rbf,

I have put more hours than I care to remember running a 6 Johnson on an 18' Grumman Sport Canoe.

The match of engine and boat was perfect. The 6 will also offer you full forward-nuetral-reverse gear control and a twist grip throttle. Makes manuevering much easier.

Here's a gently used (warranted) 6 Johnson for sale, here on iboats.

2001 Johnson 15" MHN 2-stroke New/Demo (MSRP 1438.00) 2 Yr Mfr. Warranty $1,099.00 View
