I took off my drive yesterday and laid it down on its side while I messed around with the orings. It seemed to leak a little oil out of the water drain hole.A small amount but noticeable. The drive was pressure tested before layup and held fine. Is this a problem or just a result of laying the drive on its side? Not currently leaking in upright position nor did it leak for its entire layup. Thanks

Ayuh,.... I'm gonna Guess it might be lost oil from the work ya had done,....

The drive shouldn't be Leakin', regardless which way ya lay it down,...

Re: R drive question

imho, sealed is sealed. which ever way it's oriented.

sounds like ya did the pressure test last fall and it passed. maybe something has changed over the winter?

if it were mine, it'd concern me too. enough that i'd probably drain the lub out of it and pressure test again, just to be sure it is sealed. if it passes again, perhaps Bondo is onto something.

Re: R drive question

I've seen this before when laying a drive on its side when oil leaked out of a "marginal" shift shaft bushing seal. Sometimes "exercising" the shift shaft helps (I rotate my yoke shaft, prop, and shift shafts during pressure tests). Have you changed out the shift shaft seal on this drive yet? How old is it?

Re: R drive question

can I just unscrew the bushing to replace the seals without removing the shift shaft? Don't want to pull the prop shaft to realign the shift crank. Also is there another way without the bushing tool?-Thanks

Re: R drive question

imho, pressure test the drive to find 'if' there's a leak. if there is, look to find out where prior to deciding what to replace, and what tools you'll need to replace the offening seal, if there is one. Bondo could still be correct ya know. if ya replace something, you'll still need to pressure test it to see if you accomplished the job properly and the new seal is working. as in it's sealed.

+1 on what ziggy said. Plus... IF you determine you have a leaking shift shaft bushing seal, you dont have to pull the shift shaft to replace the bushing/seals, but it is advisable to use the tool.

If you think a boat engine is high maintenance, then try looking after the things I work on, ROVs... Or if you want really high maintenance, get married... :D :bolt:

Re: R drive question

heres the results of the pressure test:
1548:put 13lbs in the dry outdrive through the fill hole.
1546:rotated prop slowly 4 or 5 times in each direction.
1606: shifted slowly from n-f-r 3x ,shifted quickly n-f-r 4x
1614: pressure held.
1618: pressure still held.
1619:let air to 5lbs.
1626: rotated prop 3 or4 times each way slowly.
1631: repeated same shift pattern as above.
1642:Holding 5 lbs.
Ambient temp at atart 63,at conclusion 64.2.Test with OD installed on boat(need a little lube on remote).
Think im good.
