Re: Raccoons....getting rid of them

I always leave a few boxes of mothballs open in my boat over the winter to keep the critters out, and seems to work. They hate the scent, and so do I.

On the farm we had a rash of racoons, prob 30 at one time, too many to shoot(neighbours ask to many questions lol ) so we got a recipe for a poison,,you mix it they will drink it and i could not believe it,they wont make it 10 ft from the dish, woke up next morning have to clean up 19 bodies all within 10 ft of the dish,it contains rat poison and coke in a tin dish, but keep in mind any mammal the drinks it will be searved the same fate,we make sure all our "pets" were in for the night..If interested i can look up the recipe..

Ok, serious solution...

Big cat urine
OR
Big cat manure

This is exactly what it sounds like, urine or manure from lions, tigers, panthers, cougars, mountain lions, etc.

It can be purchased at many garden stores, and sometimes directly from the zoo if you have one locally.

Sprinkle some of that around one side of the shed and they will vacate VERY quickly. It also works great to keep just about everything else out, too. If you have a farm this is the absolute best stuff to keep deer out as well.

Um... but, because none of any animals in our area have seen a big cat generations they would not know what the smell of them is. I don't think they would be scared if they didn't know what it was.

Well, I have had the radio on full blast in the shed for the past day. Going to buy some ammonia and place a couple bowls around the shed too. Hopefully that will get rid of them.
Thanks for the tips fellas, but I can't shoot em....I live within city limits.

So do I............hence, low velocity 22 shells worked for me........they hardly make a sound.

Coons? When raccoons try to get on our back porch, Momma just chase 'em off with a broom.

Once you do get rid of them you really need to make the shed less appealing as a critter home or you'll be back at squre one.
To bait racoons I use marshmallows, peanut butter and sardines, it works great but is delicious so self control is a must! :D:D

I haven't tried this myself, but I understand they hate the smell of propane. Empty a 20 pound bottle under the shed. If they don't leave from the smell, toss a match; this will effectively remove any possible hiding spots for them.

Most animals, even those that regularly get hunted by big cat's, have never actually seen one, much less seen it peeing. It's built into their instinct to know that that smell means danger.

I had problems with rabbits and deer in my veggie garden a couple of years ago, and spread about a quart of the big cat urine around the perimeter. I havn't had a single nibble on anything in the garden since... meanwhile, my neighbor's garden is getting wiped out from them. I havn't given them my secret yet. :)

By the way, apart from the zoo, we have no big cats here at all, yet it still works great.

Sorry fairlaneman i mean nothing cruel or untastefull but there is a limit to everything.. We lost a entire heard of cattle(around 117 head) to a rabid racoon growing up. It bit one cattle beast and when it was discovered we had to have all of them destroyed at our cost, lost everything that year and for many years after that..Hard to get that hit back, our barn was condemmed for a certain amount of time..it was horrible. To this day i will not harm a animal unless for good reason,as for the poison it works, its quick.Depends on your situation if you want to go that route...

I imagine they extract it from the bedding via washing or something like that. It would still suck, but not as much as trying to get a lion to pee in a cup. :D
