If it were me, I'd just use a split bearing puller to remove it. No need to be cutting anything if you have the correct tools for the job.

Many ways to skin a cat, I have a torch so I'd use that, otherwise the groove / chisel method would work just fine. In my opinion those spindles are toast and should be replaced, but can probably be "fixed" enough to work.

On The BB with a easy lube axle thing, is not the purpose of the BB to keep positive pressure on the seals, so there should be no issue with using both?

I fully admit my anti BB bias so take this with that in mind but it would be my fear that taking the BB on and off to use the EZ Lube Zerk would make you more likely to have the BB fly off some day on the road.

That very well could be? To be honest with you I don't know were I stand on BB's.

Honestly I never have thought much of BB. A once a year repack was all you ever needed with regular caps.. The idea behind BB is good but few ever used them as prescribed and it more than likely caused more hub failures that any thing else. The Dexter / safety lube type of system simply takes a lot of work out of the yearly hub maintenance. Instead of spending most of a day jacking up a trailer and puling hubs and cleaning and repacking, it takes 15 minutes. hubs still need to be maintained regardless of what you have. If you dont then your stuck on the side of a road. It only takes once to break you of that.

To the OP once you get things sorted out you will really like that system

I popped off the bearing buddy on the other side. Its just a bunch of grease caked up on the castle nut. I can see why a bearing buddy would be useless in this situation.

I took a closer pic of the seal surface. It does have 2 noticable scratches. Not very deep but I can feel it with my finger nail. Will putting the new seal over this just leak water by?

Yes it will. And over time it will eat the seal up.

Well thats what I was afraid of.. So I can try a sleeve kit ($40) or replace the entire axle (~$160)

How successful will a sleeve be? I assume I will need an accruate micrometer to get the correct sleeve, that I do not have. Options?

in your position its best to just get the new axle, that way you are sure its all new and you have no failures in the near future. you will also know for sure your bearing sizes and spindle size.

you can also get better prices then that, here is an example near me but they can ship it to you to Boat and Utility Trailer Axles at Champion Trailers

Keep in mind that the Bearing Buddy system was not designed to lubricate the bearings.
It lightly pressurizes the air spaces in the hubs to prevent water getting in.

The E-Z Lube hubs were designed to lubricate the the hubs from the inside out.
An added benefit is that they fill the hubs 100% with grease so there are no air spaces for water to fill.
Even if the grease seal is not sealing there is no place for the water to get into.

Re: Race stuck on axle

Hey guys, thanks for all the input. Im sorry for all the stupid questions, but I do have another!

I found this bearing kit at academy Academy - C.E. Smith Company Replacement Wheel Bearing Kit

Will this work? Going by the Karavan website the bearings I need are 1-3/8" and 1-1/16" And going by the academy description, those appear to be the same.

Saying this because today the VP of my HOA stopped by my house today due to multiple complaints. I just need to get this thing out of my driveway untill I can get a day off to do it the right way. Which appears to be installing a new axle.

Probably work just fine, double check the bearing and race part numbers to be sure.

Well.. All the bearing and races matched except one race was slightly off. Part #L44610 vs L44611. Apparently they fit the same bearing but the OD is different by like .04 in

So i guess I'll just have to wait.

It's a sad thing that certain people complain about your trailer being in the driveway and not knowing or understanding your problem.I am sure it isn't a continuous situation where you keep the trailer there. One of the reasons i wouldn't live in a complex like that.Erks me to no end about people like this

Re: Race stuck on axle

Well, I wanted to thank everyone for their help on this!

Parts I ordered from the trailer dealer still haven't arrived, but I found the bearings at oreillys. Go figure, waiting all this time for parts and its right down the street. Not sure what to do with all these parts coming in now lol. I ordered the entire hub so I wouldn't have to deal with installing bearings, but that was incredibly easy. I used a dremel to get the old race off. Filed down the high spots, then used emery cloth to smooth it all out. It all worked out really well and was much easier than I thought it was going to be.

So I got her all fixed today and got her back in the storage where she belongs.

Once again, thank you everyone for the help.
