Quotes

<<Roberts wrote for the majority. "The way to stop discrimination on the basis of race is to stop discriminating on the basis of race.">>

Good, hope we are beyond the point where we can look at the color of anyone?s skin and say they need help because of the skin color.

Quote

<<The Supreme Court addressed similar issues in 2003 when it ruled by 5-4 that racial preferences can be used in university admission decisions. But since then, Alito replaced the author of that opinion, the more moderate Justice Sandra Day O'Connor.>>

I?m assuming that is referring to the decision that this link goes too, I wonder what happens with this decision? Which I thought was a bad decision.

<<ANN ARBOR, Mich.?In a major victory for U-M announced June 23, the Supreme Court of the United States upheld the right of universities to consider race in admissions procedures in order to achieve a diverse student body.>>

<<In two lawsuits challenging University of Michigan admissions policies, the court ruled 5-4 in favor of the Law School and, by a vote of 6-3, reversed, in part, the University?s undergraduate policy, while still allowing for the consideration of race in admissions.>>

Re: Racial Diversity in Schools

Well there is the race factor and the MONEY factor in public schools

Over in the area were they have money the public school has and olympic pool and all the costly programs that go with it

If you drive 15 minutes away the people who do NOT have money have a building ready to fall down and out of date text books

NOW i dont want to be moveing kids all over Long Island BUT do find the difference in public schools in one county to pretty unfair to a child just because he has poor parents

So if I want to donate some money to my kids school... you want to force me to give an equal amount every where? How about I just pull my kids out and put them in private school....

I say privatize all the schools - people who can't afford to send kids there will either have to (a) depend on the generosity of the future geniuses & business magnates they will undoubtedly produce for scholarships or (b) not have any kids.

How did you guess I have exactly 0.0 kids?

Re: Racial Diversity in Schools

I can say that this is a great step in the right direction. I have first hand experience that this little diversity experiment does nothing but ruin community and bring the education down to the lowest common denominator.

When I was in high school in the mid-eighties, the city school board decided they needed to desegregate. I lived in a predominently white neighborhood that went ot the community highschool that was also predominently white (this is with the exception of a large contingent of Hmong immigrants).

Just across the river was the exact opposite. So the mental giants conceived this idea that each student in these schools would spend one trimester each year of their Fresh, Soph, and JR years at the other school. Just so we could sit next to somebody of a different color.

From an educational perspective, they had to standardize the curriculum and materials between the schools and identify points where the trimester would break so that you could easily go from one school to another. In reality what happened is that the long time teachers that had built up their own lesson plans, materials, etc were now forced to use new textbooks and to use them as their primary teaching tool. Well those teachers retired and we were instead taught by teachers that new how to say "read chapter 1 and do the questions at the end". Wow, exciting. In my school, we would actually get to the end of the trimester material 2-3 weeks early and just stop because we had to pickup at the pre-defined stop at the other school.

I also had to get up an hour earlier to catch a bus for a 1 hour drive across the river to the other school. YOu didn't want to miss you busride home because there was a reasonably good chance you would get the pulp beat out of you by the local boyz.

Now the controversy.. My school was an 80 year old building with windows that would rattle in the cold minnesota wind. They designated our school the Cosmotolgy magnet school.

The school across the river was a new facility with state of the art media center, SECURITY, etc.. It was also designated the math and science magnet.

Our school had vastly higher test score and grad rates of the other. What I am trying to show is that this school district threw money at the other school and it didn't bring the success of education up. To bring the educational level up it has to be from the home and family. it is not black or white.

The desegregation only brought the education level down and really spent a lot of money and effort for some liberals experiment.

I currently send my kids to private schools and will do so throughout highschool. that way they are not pawns in some other hair brained liberal experiment.

Re: Racial Diversity in Schools

When a school board selects who goes to which school based on race, its called diversity.

When a cop pulls someone over based on race it is called profiling.

Hmmmmm...... regardless of racial decisions........... no effect on Vermont schools. We are 96.9% white and the rest is made up by minorities.

Well, it makes sense to me that if the taxpayers in one area are poor then the services they pay for will also be of lesser quality. Sure, it sucks, but life isn't fair. Deal with it.

Yeah, same here. There was only one black kid at my high school and a few mexicans...that's it.

Re: Racial Diversity in Schools

There is a bit of controversy here in my town.

There is talk of kids having to be bused past two schools so they district can have racial equality.

Whats really stupid is that all schools are equivalent as far as teachers and curriculum. My niece just graduated #4 from the "poor" school. She had a lot of competition. She said her teachers were great.

Hopefully it is just talk.

In the end, it is the parents who make the kids do good in school. Rich or poor doesnt matter.

All very true Ken, but for the life of me I cannot understand a parent who would let their child get on a bus to be sent across town unless it was for a school of my choice. Even then chances are my child would be driven, not spending hours on a bus.
