radiator flush - WHAT WAS I THINKING?!

Okay, I decided to flush my radiator, because us Do-It-Yourselfers like to well... do it yourself. So I place the '99 Ford Taurus SE V6 on jackstands, remove the splash shield from under the bumper (takes 5.5mm wrench, by the way) then spray drain petcock (a white plastic bolt thing) with spray lube (like haynes manual requires), then apply the slightest amount of pressure to it and "SNAP", it breakes. Wife goes to autozone for replacement.

I am supposed to remove upper radiator hose and thermostat housing, ya RIGHT ! No access.

I use a Prestone Flushing Kit, which it a "T" that splices into the heater coil hose and has a flush valve on it. The Prestone flushing kit instructions say to remove radiator cap... I don't have one.

Long and painful story short, my radiator is empty, I think I flushed the engine out, I drained as much as would drip out of the radiator, I'm letting it cool.... but how do I get antifreeze/water mix back into all the engine. The instructions read "pour it into the thermostat hole", which is completely impossible.

Help, I'm gonna blow!!

What the h#ll is wrong with auto manufacturers - NO rad cap :( :(

Disconnnect top hose at the rad end, use another hose to connect to rad, bend it up slightly and insert large funnel. Pour away.

How are you supposed to check coolant levels during routine maintenance?????

Don't worry about the drain plug, if it's broken off in the 'closed' position, leave it be.

There is defimitely an access cap on your car somewhere. Ther has to be an overflow container somewhere, and it will have a pressure cap on it(a radiator cap) If there were none, your block would crack from the build up of pressure.

There is an overflow canister (opaque plastic), but I don't know if pouring fluid in there will fill the car, it's typically just an overflow, right?

Duna, wish I would undo top radiator hose, but it's buried!

Does the overflow canister have a cap? I think your talking about the expansion bottle - that's where you fill. It's just an extension of the rad top tank.

Yes, the "overflow tank" has the pressurized radiator cap on it. Should be mounted on the right inner fender. You should be able to fill it there. However, I like the idea of pouring it in the top hose. That way you know for sure the Rad is filled.

Yup, my wife's Contour is the same way. You have to refill via the overflow tank.

Check your owners manual, it should have a pictorial of the engine compartment and the location of the various filler caps.

Dont flush your radiator unless you do it every year.

The crud that builds up over 6 years will come off all at once and plug up your radiator.

Just drain the system and refil, or drain system, flush it, then have radiator shop clean radiator, then refil.

Also, dont use carb cleaner or gas tank cleaner for the same reasons.

Ken
