Radio has no power

I have a Sony removable face radio/CD in my boat that will not power on. I've done the typicaly non-technical things like slam the faceplate off and on a few times, pressed every button 1000 times, and even checks the fuses which looked OK. Is there some device I can use to check to see if the radio is getting battery power and the radio is just bad or something I can use to trace the power from the battery up to the radio and see maybe where the power is being lost?

All of my other electricals work - lights, trim, guages, etc.

Thanks.

Re: Radio has no power

The radio has three main wires to check. Red 12v power, black ground, and yellow or blue remote wire. You can pull it out and hook 12v power and a ground and see if it turns on. Could be a bad radio.

Re: Radio has no power

Do not put power to the blue remote wire. This is an out feed that comes on with the head to power amps. Look for the yellow or orange wire. This should be your memory power wire. It needs to have power. I have even seen them with two reds. The stereo requires two hot ins. One needs, or should be, on a switch.

Did you just put the stereo in? Just get the boat? Did it work before?

Most importantly, did you get the head wet?

If it is a new to you boat, do you have a switch that is marked "accessory"? My boat has three of these. One turns power on the the stereo, one to the depth, and the third to my 12v plug.

We need a little more info to be able to narrow down the problem and be of use. Otherwise, we could have you running all over the place.

Try cleaning the contacts on face plat and contacts on stereo where faceplate cotacts conect! If that doesn't work, on that brand of radio there is a red and orange wire, and black wire. remove radio from boat and place negative wire on negative side of a 12 volt batery and place both red and orange to the positive side of battery! if the doesn't trurn it on slaming your faceplate on could have broke a small transistor or resitor inside stereo. Good luck hop this help ya!

Re: Radio has no power

Its a new boat to me but a used one. Radio was already in it. the radio has worked for me once. I do not have a switch for it which amazed me. Once I left the faceplate on and it drained my battery so I removed the faceplate. But I've yet to be able to power it on again.

Going to check the ground wire connection as well as connect the + and - to a separate battery to make sure it powers on.

Will also clean the connector. It looks fine, but I know, it's worth trying.

Thanks for the help.

There might be a fuse on the back of the head unit behind the wiring harness. I would check for that as well.

Check the wires with a multimeter. Available at any wally world or hardware store for about $20. Put red into the connector and black to any grounding point.

Will tell you if the radio is getting power. If not same meter will let you check different points to see where power is being lost.

Also make sure the ground is properly connected, the black wire. if it isn't radio will not work even if it is getting power.
