okay, trying to get all of the water out of the bilge and raised the tongue of the trailer. outdrive was down and came in contact with ground. as soon as i noticed, i lowered tongue and checked the tilt system which works fine.

the caulking around the outdrive/transom mating surface is somewhat old and weathered as seen on the top of the outdrive:

however, on the underside, there is a noticeable gap in the old caulking:

is there anyway to know how much damage i've done, or am i just going to have to wait about a month, drop it in the lake and pray?

thanks. sorry about the crappy pics. i'm pretty pissed off with myself about the whole situation.

The only reason it would pull loose like that is because the transom is rotten, allows the nut plates on the inside to pull through.

If you can reach them, probably won't help.

Is that a 4 cyl volvo that has no front motor mounts? If so there is a lot of strain on the transom, make sure the wood is not totally rotten, make sure there is wood to compress when you tighten the bolts. You are going to have to replace the transom eventually.

His signature says (aq225e/275) which is a V8, and it has side mounts.

Re: raised tongue with outdrive down. d'oh! (pics)

Last year, during my first season of power boating, I forgot to lock my winch and as I backed down the ramp my boat rolled halfway off the trailer before coming to rest with the outdrive on the ramp. I'd guess at least half the weight of the boat was on the nose of the drive. I winched the boat back on the trailer, fearing I'd ruined my drive. I ended up with only a minor scratch on the drive (but much worse damage to my ego). There was no damage to the transom.

If you transom is solid, you shouldn't have a problem. If you do see a gap between the transom plate and the hull, you have trouble.

OP...if what these guys are saying is true, and I would lean towards that being the case, you probably did yourself a favor by doing this and finding out on dry land, rather than your transom crumbling to dust when you nail the throttle while 3 miles from land and the torque of your engine shreds that rotten wood. I would count this as a blessing.

It is not solid - the caulking was added in the past to seal a prior leak, and he has a visible gap now....

i didn't pay much for the boat, but when i was banging on the transom as i was looking at it, i was getting and am getting now a sharp crisp sound.

but, that may just be my untrained ear.

Not to slam 'possums boat (love the name btw), but we are talking about an older bayliner here. Is it possible, that his transom is not actually rotten, but is in fact just very thin and weak to begin with?

Nope,... Not really....

Bayliners are entry level boats, but by spec they have a 2" transom....

That's what happens when people repeat what "they heard", without any kind of actual knowledge of the subject or ability to verify what they say before saying it.

In some places it's called repeating a rumor. Forums are a wonderful place to keep a bad rumor going.

Thats why I asked a question, instead of saying "the reason is because...blah blah blah". And bond-o answered my question, so therefore the transom must be rotten. Ugly rumor squashed, question answered. Hand slap not warranted in this case, thank you.

It wasn't a hand slap, it was a comment.

Why do you think that every time I say something that you don't like it's a hand slap?
