Raising up my motor

My motor site about 3 inches too low in the water, give or take a few.
It is currently on the lowest setting with the bolts that hold it on, and sits flush right on top of the transom. So some of the weight of the motor is resting on the top of the transom, and it is not all on the mounting bolts.

I can raise the motor to another mounting hole on the motor, but this would raise the motor off the top of the transom, and all of the weight would be on the 4 bolts.
Would this be a problem, or would putting a peice of wood inbetween the top of the transom and the bottom of the motor mount help solve the problem?

You didn't say what kind of boat or motor it is, but the bolts are designed to take the entire load, no need for any block to support the motor.

i've seen motors that don't have transom clamps sit higer than the top of the transom. the transom is supporting the weight. the bolts are just fastening the motor to the transom. i just installed a cmc power trim unit that is fastened only by 4 bolts. then the motor sits on the cmc unit.

Concur, if your transom is good it will easily hold that and I don't think the peice of wood would do anyhting anyhow.

I would go all the way up then work down a hole at time until it is right, should be less moves.

You should be happy with the results, i picked up several MPH when I raised mine.

Re: Raising up my motor

Jackplates are made for most HP motors. I have one on my 135HP Merc.
I recommend you start by using the existing motor mount holes, in the transom bracket. I had my 150HP Johnny all the way up using the standard mounting holes. The top of the transom clamp was at least 2" above the transom. It is made to adjust this way. It might just work for you. If not, there are a bunch of jackplates that will work for you.

Re: Raising up my motor

my motor is the same exact way. You can leave the bolts in the holes. and remove the top 2 botls, and lift up the motor a few inches, and put the top bolts back in the same hole thru the transom, but thru a different hole in the motor mount.
The bottom bolts just slide down a oblong hole, streching about 2 inches.

I do have a strong transom, i just thought not having the top clamps touch the transom would put more stress on the motor as well as the transom.
i feel like the motor will sway fore and aft more.

Re: Raising up my motor

If you need a jack plate one could be used, but the stress on the transom would actually be greater with one because you're not only moving the motor up, but slightly backwards too. If your transom is strong enough to to hold the motor safely in the current position then raising it will not be a problem.

Jack plates "are" only designed for smaller motors, anything bigger than 300HP may need a different mounting system.

yea, i think the jack plate would only make things worse, i basically have a built in jack plate.
