You must understand the load on the engine in relation to the throttle plates.
If you have so much pitch that it takes wide open throttle to achieve 5000RPM, then drop a couple of inches and you will note that at 5000RPM, the plates are only partially open indicating it requires less fuel at that RPM-keep in mind that RPM is the figure we go by for optimum engine life, speed is only a result of how efficient we have made the set-up. You may be slightly slower at the same RPM with less pitch, but economy and engine life go up...AND....if set-up with the correct prop, you can have the RPM and speed both but you must be willing to "tweak" the total set-up.
