Ram cylinders

Hi all, appears one of the rams has a slight leak, which of course it does, as I have been leaking fluid through the notorious trim cover (Volvo is sending me two covers - which covers only half the problem as I think I need pumps too.. and you can't order the pumps seperatly.. issue for another thread!).

Anyway, I figured I'd just order four rams but they come in three options: full, 42 and 32.

The drives are in the water and I have a swim platform. Any idea on how to figure out what le gth of rams I need?

Thanks!

2008 or thereabouts. They are attached to the VP Gi-300-j.

To be honest, I'm not that mechanically inclined to remove, rebuild, then re-attach successfully.

I was hoping to have the trim pump/cover done at the same time too as that is causing some issues.

a rebuild kit is $75 new cylinders are about $1200 each

if you pay a dealer, add 5 hours at $150/hr

if you removed the cylinders, buy the rebuild kit, go to your local hydraulic repair shop, they may charge you $100 to rebuild

Hate to disagree here.... This trim system's lack of competent engineering is on par with the X-DP drives..... Thus meaning do not pull the cylinders off or touch the trim lines..... Google search VolvoPentaParts@ hotmail.com and grab that cylinder rebuild kit which will repair 2 cylinders.... Seals are an upgraded design including pistons seal which is a 1 piece design.... The od seal is also a 1 piece design which has less failure points and material expands and contract consistently.

Roger.

That side has enterely stopped moving. I can hear the motor running, but I guess I was concerned that they are seized and beyond rebuilding.

It's frustrating because on the other side I have that trim cover that is busted and water is for sure in that pump (VP sending me 2 trim covers) but I worry what kind of damage has taken place already to the pump and cylinders.

There's not much going on inside a trim cylinder and its a lot of stainless in there, it would take a long time to corrode. Get yourself a good pin wrench and remove the caps and check it out. You do have to be very careful with reinstalling the hydraulic lines, the chance of cross-threading and messing up the soft aluminum threads on the cylinder side is possible.

Fair enough.

I think my plan will be to order the rebuild kits, get some hydraulic place nearby to do it, then the marina to install them.

The boat has to be lifted out for the work by the marina anyway.

Then they can flush both pumps and do the covers at the same time.
