Been a busy day and sitting here winding down. Actually I'm thinking about my retirement next year and my boat. I hope to use it a lot more of course. I have a 1988 23' CC with a pair of 1987 110 hp 1.6L crossflow Seadrives on it. Although they run well now they are salt water engines and one, the other or both will give it up down the road.

I have been thinking that when I retire it might be a neat project to buy a V4 powerhead with a bad hole and do a careful rebuild and stick it under the workbench ready to go when one of the engines that are on the boat now give out.

I mentioned this idea to one of my local OMC repair guys. He said that if it were him he would scrap my V4s when the time comes. Rather than rebuild a V4 he suggested that I buy a V6 with a bad hole and rebuild it to replace the V4s.

What are your thoughts and if your would go the V6 route which engine would you look for? I would probably need at least a 200 hp or better. I would also need an external bracket, cables, and instruments (maybe?).

Re: Ramblin Mood on Rebuilding

I know where a couple or rebuidable 250 and 225 yamahas are.
the only real issue I can see with the seadrive is certain parts of the mid section are getting a bit difficult to find.
as long as the midsections dont let go the gearcase and powerheads are readily avalible and repairable.
the only crossflow I would stay away from is the big bore ones. the cyl liner jackets liked to disaapear in saltwater rendering the block all but junk.
I do know were a good project 1995 225 looper is :).
