Ran a ground and now shaking like a leaf !

Hello all,<br />New to iboats and boating as well. I recently ran a ground in the great south bay. i had the passengers go to the front of the boat and i reversed and hit more ground. Since then the boat shakes like a leaf when it is in drive and pulls to the left. the boat is a 1988 21' maxum runabout with a 3.0 liter mercruiser engine and alpha one outdrive. hydraulic is not currently working so i cannot pull it up to see the prop. i hope i just lost a blade on the prop. I hope its something that simple. Anyone have any suggestions? What would be the worst case as far as cost of repair? <br />Thanks <br />Joe NY

If you can get the boat out of the water on to a trailer and then check out the drive unit. Make a visual check as to any damage to the stern drive and go from there.<br /><br />welcom to iboats.

Worst case....hmmm a new lower unit, prop and possibly the coupler.<br /><br />Do not run the boat till you have it checked. You may have trashed the prop and that will need to be changed. Can't you find any "clear" water to look at the prop? How about a diving mask?<br /><br />Be careful.<br /><br />Bob

welcome aboard!<br /><br />it could be as simple as the prop but could be as bad as a new outdrive at the very worst. i wouldn't get too worried yet though. you need to get a better look to assess the damage.<br /><br />sounds like you're in a slip, no trailer? you or whomever you get to work on it will need to get to the outdrive. <br /><br />someone else will have to help you get the hydraulics working, not my thing. but, did you check fuses?<br /><br />don't sweat it too much, everyone touches bottom at one point or another.

Like everyone else said you need to get a look at it. You may have just bent the prop, the pulling left could be as simple as a bent skeg. You really need to get it looked at, but don't run it, that could make things worse.

Welcome to iboats and the "I've touched tera firma club", (hope no one was hurt). Just know you’re in the best company in both. <br /><br />You should have someone knowledgeable review the damage. It's possible there is more there than meets the eye. And as stated before running the boat before its repaired could cause additional damage. Good luck!

you need a current chart to learn were the water is thin<br /><br />very easy to do on the great south bay with 3 ft avg water depth<br /><br />done it a lot my self 8 ft wide channels 3' 6" deep<br /><br />the bottom is almost 100% sand so the prop is the most likely <br /><br />there may be a problem with what you sucked through the water pump i have cloged the thermostat with bay bottom a few times<br /><br /><br />tommays

You have probably trashed the prop. You need only to lift the outdrive and look to find out

Get the thing out of the water. Not doing you any good there. <br /><br />Find a trailer or a friend with a dock that can haul it out so you can get a good visual of what is wrong.<br /><br />Hard to give any other advice until you can actually see the problem

Sure glad I live on the North Shore.... Water's plenty deep up here... Too bad it's the dirtiest, stinkiest water in NY though....<br /><br />Good luck with the diagnosing, Joe....
