Headed back to the ramp Saturday after getting brutalized by high winds all morning (National Weather Service blew the forecast yet again), a bass boat with a couple fathers & young sons (maybe 5 or 7 YO) flagged me down, about a quarter mile from the launch. Out of gas needing a tow, no prob. I asked if they had any luck. "We just got here."
I said "you just got here & out of gas already?"

Is that stupid enough? Don't answer, there's more......he tilts his motor up & I notice the two-bladed prop on a 70 hp motor - it originally had 3 blades, looked like a DIY modification, most likely with a concrete ramp or similar tool.

But wait, there's more. I pull into the no wake zone & untie the tow line expecting they can use the trolling motor to dock....they pull out a couple paddles.....I said "sorry, didn't mean to make you paddle.....trolling motor not working?"
"Dead battery."

Re: Ran out of gas....................

I've seen people needing to jump start their boat and once it's running they proceed to head out into Lake Ontario. Lake Ontario is no place for a boat not running correctly.
One late afternoon the wife and I are heading into port on Lake Ontario and the wife thinks she see someone trying to flag us down. We get there which is 11 miles offshore and find the boat dead in the water because they ran out of gas. The driver tells me he was meaning to get the gas guage fixed he just didn't have the time. So I ask if he had a VHF or cell phone and he states, "don't need them". He said he was trying to flag down boats for the last three hours and either nobody saw him or they ignored him. Once I got him back to the dock he states he would love to pay me for the extra fuel and I tell him not to bother. He asks for my address because he didn't have any money on him. I figured I'd never hear from the loser again. You know about two weeks later their was a check for $100 in the mail as well as a dinner certificate for my wife and I at a very nice restaurant.
