It a deal to buy a trailer i had to take the boat and a rotten quitta fiberglass bass boat and a 33 horse evinrude with electric start . Well the boat is set up for stick steer and has sat at least 20 years under a barn. Well i was just going to scrap the motor too, but i played with it and got it attempt to start lower unit grease was old but clean . A couple of question , like are there any available parts sources for one this old , can i convert it to tiller and is a motor like this really worth messing with or should i sell it somebody who collects ? thanks

Those were good old mtrs in their day and may be worth repairing as there are still a lot of them around. Check the Top Secret files on the top of this forum. I'd rather have one of them than these " new tech mtrs" we have today.

Hi rivermudcat. I had a '66 33hp for years and it was/is a great motor. They can easily be converted to tiller drive or controls. I'd say it's worth the effort if you have decent compression. With a new tune up kit (points and condensers), a carb rebuild, and a new inpeller you should end up with a great running motor. All told you can get all the new parts for under $100 right here a t iboats, and it shouldn't take more than an hour or two to install them. The hardest part with these guys is probably just getting the flywheel off, which isn't really that bad. Here's a great site that can walk you through all the steps you need to bring this "Big Twin" bak to life. Keep us posted. We love pics:)

Those stick steer setups are pretty desirable also. So definitely don't trash that!!

It has decent compression and its just a really clean old motor , Really I thought the stick steer idea wasn't good idea , but i saved it anyway . can u get a replacement cable for it ? Also what year and horsepower tiller handles will fit this beast ? thanks again

That tiller was used for about 20 years on all the Big Twins and V-4s where applicable. Early ones had different gears on the twist throttle shaft, but are interchangeable as a set.

I like the tiller set up too. While they can be a little loud to sit next to it's nice to have a nice reliable simple steering system too. The good news is that it's simple to install or remove either way, but do hold on to it. you never know when you might want or need it again.

I concur with all of these guys. Fix 'er up. Great motors, that were built on the 1957 35hp design, with a slightly later style fiberglass shroud. Very simple to work on too.

I got a '69 33hp last fall, fixed her up and she runs great. Good engine. Just verify good compression before putting any $$$ into it.
