Re: rant: irresponsible dog owners

I have had 9 dogs in my life and never has ANYONE of them EVER been a threat to anyone including a Full Blooded German Shepard and a Great Dane.

Right.......at least to your knowledge.;)
Dog owners are a lot like modern moms....the worst people to ask about their opinion on their 'charges'.
What I have learned is....never ask a dog owner...or a mom about 'theirs', ask the neighbour or a relative, that way you'll actually get some useful info out of the deal.

You are 100% absolutely correct I can not be 100% sure that my dogs weren't a threat to anyone but what I can do is minimize the risk by installing a fence which I did for my German Shepard who was the most finicky of all the dogs, it was a 6 foot tall chain link fence with an electrified horse fence on the top and on the bottom. The Great Dane went to obidience school and lived inside and also had a 6 ft tall chain link fence. The rest of the dogs were all ankle biters and NOT 1 time did they ever go anywhere without a leash. My child is a good kid but you know what he has a smart mouth and an attitude problem as well as doesn't like authority, but he is also Generous caring and knows his manners. It is a flip side coin if people take responsibility for their actions then it never becomes an issue. You are correct though the Great Dane was a threat to ONE person ever, and you know why it was never a problem because when she saw that person was a threat she couldn't do anything because she was RESTRAINED ON A LEASH.

The German Sheppard also found a person she didn't like my wife's aunt but it was never a problem because SHE WAS ON A LEASH, this dog was not a good dog at all, and it was my fault because I was truck driver when we had her and I didn't spend the time neccessary to train her properly, but she was always restrained.

While I'd use a can of it myself in a pinch, It's not true that it's legal to use it as a dog repellant. The can states that it's illegal to use it in a manner other than what it was intended for. (I think even Twinkie packages say that) If you're in your yard you could just say you were spraying for wasps and hit Fido w/the only thing you had, not the case if you're walking down the road packing a can of Raid.

Re: rant: irresponsible dog owners

I've shot about a dozen dogs through the years for various attacks. A couple of them were mine. An out of control dog is an out of control dog, no matter who own's it.

One time I had a whole flock of chickens destroyed by a pair of dogs from about a mile away. I had enough evidence to know which ones they were. With that neighbor's permission, I dispatched the dogs in his back yard. He disposed of them himself, and paid me for the lost birds. No hard feelings, just settled things.
