Re: Rant Mode On! I want to hurt someone.

Those site do have a lot of info on them. I am curious thoug were you able to pick the correct dog? I always thought of myself as being able to spot any breed of dog. However I have to admit it did take me three times to get it right.
On that point, one of my lake buddies is said to be part pit.
Friendliest, (and fastest), dog that I've ever met.
Scooby is on the right. Does anyone else see the pit in him before I give him up here as an example of a friendly pit?

Re: Rant Mode On! I want to hurt someone.

So, anyone out there have experiance with Pit Bulls or cross breeds with a Pit Bull mix? Are they really prone to turning aggresive or is it mostly hype? How about kids? My grandkids visit and play with our Shepard all the time, would the pup grow to be a problem for them?

All thoughts welcomed!!!

First of all, you're great for doing the right thing with this pup, and also for addressing your concerns. I don't understand why pit bull breeders/fighters would think they need to breed more loyalty into an animal they are going to viciously abuse and neglect. Terriers, including Pit Bulls are some of the most loyal dogs already.

I had an American Staffordshire Terrier, basically, a large pit bull. She was 92 1/2lbs, and looked like a canine version of a Greek God carved from granite. She could be lying on the floor in a deep sleep and you could clearly see her muscles rippling with every breath. She was flawlessly loyal. When called, she wouldn't leave me until I told her to go lay down, go play, go eat, ect. She loved anybody I was freindly with (or acted like she did, anyway). She was wonderful with children. The smaller the child, the more slowly she moved, and the more gentle she was. She was my last dog prior to going into the military. I have two sons (2 & 7), and would have no problem with having an Amstaff. or Pit bull if I were to get another dog. There would be no worries.

Pit bulls have a very bad reputation because of what some horrible people have turned theirs into. There's no such thing as a bad dog; only bad owners, and bad training. A dog is a dog, and anything can happen for reasons we may not understand, regardless of breed.

Sounds like you have a terrific puppy.

My buddies 2 year old pit with his then probably 18 month old ear and hair pullin tail yankin cute little girl. I have more worries in my beagle being around kids than that dog. Absolutely amazing to watch the big/powerful of a dog at a full gate playing with a dog in the same athletic category. Honestly he has about the same mentality as my beagle, will play on command, will stop on command, lays around all day, and only barks at strangers, but they won't be strangers for long. I agree they're great dogs.

That looks a lot like Scooby, my lake buddy. I guess that confirms Scooby is part pit.

My friend had a pit/lab cross and it was just a fun dog. I think the lab came out more than the Pitbull.

I know a few people with Pit mixes. Wonderful dogs! Pits get a bad rap in MHO It's how the dog is raised not the breed.

My Scooby is a fun and friendly dog, but I did get a report from the lake that he and the pack may have been responsible for the abrupt demise of a neighbor's cat. I heard the authorities were involved.
I love my lake dogs, but they are free-range and that can lead to trouble.
I blame the pack and not Scooby's pit ancestry.

in dog versus cat? LOL our 5 lb toy poodle will go after a cat faster then any dog I've ever seen. I don't think it would be the pit heritage causing that either. LOL

Well done!! I have had a dog for as long as I can remember, when I was in the service my Dad took care of mine and it was there for me when I was discharged. This last one I have had for about 14 years she was about six months and was a stray. She has put up with me longer than my first wife did

I don't know if I will get another one after this, gets more difficult with every one. But I am sure fate will send something my way again so I won't have to go looking:rolleyes:

I reiterate? the defense of the breed. Ive seen an adopted pitpup who became a fantastic squirrel hunting dog w no training at all it had a beagles disposition.Another that was a beautiful blue brindle, 140lbs, and looked as menacing as a rabid bear but was a complete sweetheart. He could hurt you.... as he flopped in your lap on the couch!Or if you wrestled w him(he was a strong opponent!!).you can train any dog to be mean, guard, etc. Pits are built for fighting, but they have to be taught to be dangerous or obedient.Glad you found a home for the dog.

Like I always tell people, If you ever wonder if you dog will stand by you longer than anyone else. Lock you wife and your dog in the garage for about an hour then open the door. See which one is happy to see you.

Seriously though good job bubba I'm glad the dog found a good home.

My large golden used to clock me every time I wrestled with her, that darn dog knocked me out more times than I can remember and if she was worked up and got close to the jewels, then watch out!

Glad you found her a good home Bubba..

Re: Rant Mode On! I want to hurt someone.

It may grow into the best dog you never had, you would be the one that saved it's life.

few years back a coworker called about a dog he almost hit leaving the office, so I cruised out there and saw her, opened my jeep door and whistled, she ran over and jumped in like she belonged. She was in a bad area, near a highway, airport, and 4 lane 50mph road, and it had been near 100 every day for a couple weeks with no rain. I gave her what I found in the office refrigerator with some water and took her to the vet, she was all bloody and had no hair on her chest.
vet kept her, tried to find the owner, couldn't, turned her to the county shelter, who traced the chip to the breeder (it was never registered) then to whoever purchased the dog. came from KS, probably a puppy mill. Owner said they "gave the dog away" and didn't want her back, we figured she was about 1 year and a runt, she's still only 35 lbs, small for a german shorthair. So we adopted her after they told us she would need meds for life (wrong..) and she wouldn't be a candidate for adoption... she had demodex mites and needed some care ($150 worth TOPS) but she's been fine since, other than the fact that she's UTTERLY FREAKING INSANE. recently she's been aggressive with my other dogs and has been in a few nasty fights resulting in minor injuries. doggie behaviorists run about 500 bones.

so it's not always as you say..
