Re: Rants about GM
I had a 1991 chevy s10 pickup 2wd. bought it new. Think I payed $7800 for it. 2.8 liter, 5 speed. Pretty much bare. I beat that thing for 9 years. towed way too much, hauled way to much, always heavy on the gas pedal. It was rolled on its side, then it fell back on its wheels. I got out, threw the mirror in the bed, beat the front fender out, started it back up, and took off. countless firelanes, burnouts, not so good boat ramps. I put 220,00 miles on it. Not one body part was not dented or scratched. The interior was shot. Besides the normal brake jobs all I did is change the oil every 3000. Plugs once. The clutch went at 140,000 and had to replace one ball joint. Everything was original ( alt, wp, ect) It ran perfect and burned no oil. The thing was indestructable. Then I came up with the bright idea that it was time to replace it. I ordered a 2000 silverado. 3/4 ton, 6.0 liter. 4 door, heavy duty everything. All options. Even forked out the $40.00 for the factory performance air filter (????). $28,000.... at 38,000 miles the tranny went. took the dealer 4 times to fix it(with rebuilt parts). 45,000 miles. Fuel pressure regulator went. that caused all 4 oxygen sensors to go bad. 60,000 tie rod end. 90,000 flywheel shatters. 95,000 starter, 2 of the centercaps are gone, the gas guage doesnt work, the tailgate wont stay closed and the 2 braided cables on it are busted. the 2 front speakers dont work, The buttons on the radio wore through and now are white where your finger touches them, the door/window seals leak. while going down the freeway you can feel the wind, it knocks in the cold mornings, i am sure theres more. The thing is that I baby that thing. The most I have ever towed is a 16' boat. It has always had the oil changed when due, radiator been flushed twice, lubes with oil changes, air filters, fuel additives, 2 sets of plugs, It still looks like new. I am thinking that when it is time to replace this pos that Maybe I'll get a 71 chevy K10. Nice and simple, cheap to fix, and looks real cool. Just have to find one thats not a pile of rust.
