In general terms they were all very medicore at best.
Some were better than others in the various political meandorings a president must overcome to be effective.

Re: Rate the Presidents

Run the same poles on whether they were good men, the way this is worded gives poor old Jimmie a bad shake, he had a few small probs, like 22% int. and a hundred and eighty something hostages in Iran.
Then Ronnie got altimmizers, It was hard to judge his last term. not sure who was president then.
Sr. was just Sr. kinda bland, forgot to finish what he started.
Willie, well he had a nicotine addiction, and didnt know how to handle it.
We are still waiting on the final test score on GW.

Re: Rate the Presidents

Reagan was probably the best President we have had, ever.

In my lifetime I must also rate Truman as Great, Eisenhower as Good, Kennedy as Good, Johnson as So-so, Roosevelt (F.D.) as So-so and Nixon as Poor.

Carter was one of the smartest. :) Reagan was good for the economy and did great things for the military. :D Clinton was a slash and burn guy to the military and instituted don't ask don't tell  The Bush's are okay and more action oriented. I actually liked Nixon who was in office when I enlisted... he was no more crooked than the rest...just got caught :(

All these different opinions. And the freedom to say them, that’s what makes this country so great. No wonder there are so many people trying to get in our country. :)

BB. Eisenhower Got us out of Korea, shut down post-war inflation, clamped down on segregated schools, built the interstate system and kept us out of trouble for 8 years.

In my view, that is Good.

Wow! I expected to practically disagree with *everyone* on this board on this topic, and I find myself more in agreement than disagreement with most. I am shocked!

I will agree Reagan was for the most part a good president, but hardly the greatest ever.

And Carter, while I liked him, he came in during a bad time, and was unable to turn that around. However, that is what a leader is supposed to do, and he was largely ineffectual at doing it.

And while I thought Bush Sr. was so-so, I did like him, and Clinton, even with his glaring personal deficiencies, did a good job. He had it in him to be great, but did not quite get it done.

Bush Jr is simply in over his head. I don't hate him as much as feel sorry for him...

Re: Rate the Presidents

Carter was HORRIBLE for one gigantic reason... pledging amnesty in 1978 to all those who ran away from the draft during the Vietnam War. Perhaps amnesty could have been granted at some time a decade or two after the war, but granting it just three years after the fall of Siagon was plain ruthless to those who served, were injured or to those who lost loved ones in SE Asia. Dumbest move he ever made, I will never forgive him for that.

Nixon and Clinton, while tremedous leaders in certain circumstances, also fail totally, for leading the moral structure of America to fall apart, where it is now common to hear, "Why not break the law or perjure myself on the stand under oath? Hell, the President does it". Getting caught IS the big difference. They did more to drag this country down than any other Presidents in the last 100 years.
