Been lurking a while but never had anything to say.

I have had boats my whole life, just small boats like canoes, kayaks and aluminum boats with less than 10 hp motors. They have always done the job and I enjoy smaller lakes and streams. Better fishing and no yahoos on jet skis.

That said my Uncle had a 2003 Four Winns 170 Freedom with 115 Johnson. He is getting older and the boat has not been in the water in 2 years and has minimal usage. In a moment of brilliance or stupidity depending on your perspective I bought the boat off him 2 weeks ago for $6000.

I finally got the thing titled and registered during the week so it was time to take her out on the maiden voyage. I got up early this morning to get everything ready.

Put in the battery.

Gas gauge showed 1/2 tank. Add appropriate amount of Stabil to tank.

Try to raise then lower outboard so I can check/change lower end oil. The damn thing won't go up or down. Dig out meter and repair manual and trouble shoot the whole system only to decide either the electric motor or the pump is bad. With nothing to lose I think maybe they are frozen from sitting for 2 years so I take my friendly wooden mallet and whack the crap out of the motor/pump unit. The things works now. Run it up and down a few times and it seems to be cool.

The lower end is low on gear oil so I drain it and refill. Good thing cause the gear lube looks like it has never been changed. No signs of water but it is filthy.

Hook up the hose and muffs and kick it over. Starts up pretty fast for not being run in 2 years and a good **** stream so I figure I am golden to go.

Tell the wife we are ready lets go. She says it is 3:00 and to late however I say I am going and get in the truck. Off we go.

Get to the lake with a nice steep concrete ramp. Remove transom straps. Raise motor and release the travel/storage latch on the motor. Back down the ramp and float the boat. Then I can't get the winch on the trailer to let go. Feel stupid, pull out of the water. The boat is crooked on the trailer and my wife does not like it. Mess around with the winch and can't get it working. Ask the guy next to me if he can help. He comes over and has the thing working in like 5 seconds. Feel stupid again. Back down the ramp and launch the boat. Wife waits on the dock while I park the truck.

Push off from the dock. Go to lower the motor and it won't go down. Mess around pushing/pulling some and motor lowers. We start cruising around pretty slow. First things I notice are now gas gauge reads only 1/4 while earlier it read 1/2. Bum out cause I should have gotten gas on the way but figure I am OK cause this is a short cruise. Engine temp, Voltage gauges working. Four warning lights were on before starting but are now off. Speedo and tach not working. Trim gauge is all the way to Up with key off and is all the way to down with it on and not moving so it seems trim gauge is not working.

Drive around for a few minutes getting used to to feel. Start going faster but not sure how fast cause speedo is not working. Motor sounds good, nice and smooth and everything seems to be OK with the exception of the non-working gauges. I try adjusting the trim but the motor does not seems to move and down. Damn motor or pump acting up.

Cruise for like 10 or 15 minutes, just long enough to get a good distance away from the ramp when the motor dies. Start messing around and it becomes real clear that even thought the gauge reads 1/8 tank at this point I am out of gas. Now I am really feeling stupid. Sit around for a while waiting for another boat to come. Flag down the next boat and the guy offers to tow me in. So here I am on the maiden voyage of my new to me boat and I need to get towed in cause I ran out of gas.

Back at the dock I can't get the motor to go up. I back the trailer down the ramp and trailer the boat with the motor down. I pull up real slow while the wife watches to make sure I am not going to hit the motor. I make it up the ramp fine and pull out of the way on the lot. I secure the boat and hook up the transom straps. I get the lug wrench out of my tool box and pound on the motor pump unit. The things works enough for me to raise the motor however now I can't it lowered on the travel/storage bracket. Mess around and hit it some more and finally it lowers on the bracket. Pack the rest of the stuff and head home.

On the way home I stop at the gas station. Tank is 23 gallons according to the owners manual. I put in 23.4 at the pump. Guess it was empty so the gas gauge is reading wrong.

So I guess I will see how much the motor/pump costs and see if I can get it changed during the week and try again next weekend. I would do it tomorrow but I am going canoeing with the church youth group and won't have time.

Fun times.

Just a note, StaBil won't work after the fact. It needs to be put in the tank before storge. One the fuel turns it won't do anything to help bring it back.

Look at it this way:

1. All the described problems are easy enough to fix.
2. Once you have taken care of those issues YOU CAN GO OUT AND ENJOY THE BOAT!! :D

Now I feel good that my idea of give it a good wallop is used by someone other than myself.

All told, you just went through little oops. Hope that's all you run into.

Good luck and safe boating ya'll

Prior to you spending money on a pump motor.........

I would first invest in a manual for the outboard. The tilt and trim systems are notorious for being finicky when there is corrosion present in the wiring...... it has sat for two years. The fluid level in the trim motor may be low too.

If you are anywhere near the northeast the salt in the air will raise hell with the wires...... even the winter time road salt gets in the air. Annually I would go through all my wires and connections...... remove them inspect them sand them lightly and re-install.

Hey you got back to shore so that's a plus ;)

Good story. You might want to look into getting the guages working too before going back out. Good luck.

I'm jealous, my maiden voyage lasted .89 miles. The gears in the upper outdrive melted themselves together, and a 60+ year old lady in a rented pontoon had to tow me in. Your maiden voyage wasn't perfect, but I'd trade;);)

It' not that bad...........
You have all winter to fix it!
I could be as something simple as the contacts are a little oxidized for the pump........

I think you did good considering 2 years of no use or maintenance anywhere.

Amazing that the motor started and ran as good as it did.

Sounds like you may have corrosion in the lift controls somewhere.
Might be some corrosion on the fuses, or a blown fuse for the gauges.

Also sounds like you enjoyed the cruising, and that is what it's all about!

Working on the boat should also be an enjoyment! Enjoy it!

Nothing wrong with paddling a canoe, either, helps to keep you in shape..

Think of it this way, that wasn't the Maiden Voyage that was the shake down trouble shooting cruise, next time is the Maiden Voyage! Good luck with the next Maiden Voyage.

Yep, you're doomed, better sell now.

At minimum, them gauges are at least $500 a piece. Not counting installation!

And you ran outta gas? Gonna need a new gas impeller - another $1k.

I'll help you out - get it off your hands for $4k.

Nope, don't thank me, just trying to help a buddy out.

After reading your tail of woe, I thought the same thing as Bob...

I have the Seloc manual for 2002-07 Johnson outboards. That is what I used to troubleshoot/check the wiring and power. I checked all the power connections and the up/down relays, limit switches etc. They all looked good. It took me a couple of hours to go through it.

I am not sure on the fluid level. I followed the procedure to check the fluid however the hole is so small and I could not get a good look. I stuck a Q-Tip in and it came back wet so I figured the fluid was OK. Actually the first thing I am going to do is get some fluid and make sure the level is correct. With the trailer level and the motor on the storage/trailering bracket the fluid level should be even with the lip on the fill hole. I will just add fluid till it is full.

Ya well i priced the power tilt motor. It is $171 here on iBoats. I did not bother to look at pump parts.

My dad has an RV. They are as bad as boats. I have been giving him crap for years on the money he has dumped into it. I have a feeling I am due for some serious payback.

If you haven't heard this before and I'm sure most of you have:

Definition of boat: A hole in the water you throw money into.

Re: Rather Disappointing Maiden Voyage

Sorry to hear your Maiden was not memorable. When I bought My Sea Ray it had been sitting for 2 years. I found myself dying to get her in the water, it was very hard for me to resist the urge... With the possibilty always looming in the back of my mind of this big ole boat dead in the water and the thought of me trying to swim and pull her away from the bluffs in winds that whip down the lake sent a chill down my spine, it was all the motivation I needed to slow down and be very, very thorough and meticulous. I did not know the history of this boat as it was a repo and I sure as heck wasn't going to call the previous owner seeing I had his gal now, lol. Anyway I basically started at the back and worked my way forward, tracing wires (found several going nowhere, half of them hot) flushing out dirt dobber nest in bilge outlets, cracked bellows, soft rubber fuel lines, gear oil reserve bottle cracked, etc. etc. I looked at each componet, lower unit pressure checked, new seals, water impellor/pump, engine tuned up, carb replaced ($380.00 ouch!) ignition updated, compression check etc, etc. same thoroughness with the trailer, bearings, wires, lights, roller adjustment, etc, etc. It was alot of work but it was VERY enjoyable and as I was a Boat virgin I learned alot during the process. I hope my story helps you.
Your trim motor problem sounds to me like corroded wire connections, as for your fuel reading try the senders float travel, could be stuck. (Best if the tank is completely empty and your battery(s) unhooked)

Re: Rather Disappointing Maiden Voyage

By the way, IMHO the real mistake that was made was to take the wife out on the "Maiden Voyage" prior to have done a shakedown run.

Never take the wife out on that first run.
