raw water filter install needed?

My mechanic told me he didn't see a filter on my raw water intake and suggested to install it before the power steering cooler. It would help removing any debris that comes in through the outdrive intake.
Is this really necessary?
I have a raw (fresh) water cooled VP 5.7GSI with a DP-S outdrive.

No. But your mechanic is a good salesman or knows what you do.
IO's of any kind, do not come with filters, never have, probably never will.
As with any rule, there are exceptions, if you frequent tide rips, or shallow water with a lot of floating debris, maybe a strainer would be a good idea. Only you and your mechanic knows that answer.

Do you have an example of the strainer you talk about?
I don't plan to run in a lot of shallow water, but I'd rather be safe than sorry.

Howdy,

There's a lot of examples.
