Hello,

Is there a seal on the inside of an alpha 1 raw water housing(see attachment). The one I replaced had, what looked like a melted rubber seal in it.

Thanks

if i remember right (for my mc-1, which uses the same housing your use for alpha1). the s/m says there may or may not be a seal. i've had 2 mc-1 drives. niether had a seal there. just the large rubber centrifugal slinger that mounts on top (on the outside) of the water pump housing.

fwiw. the water pump housing i'm using right now looks melted in the area where you think there might be a seal at. i'm using it anyways. i think it's just how they make them... ?

There is no seal there. If it is melted in any way I would replace it. You never know (or want to know) when it may fail.

Re: raw water impeller housing

Merc stopped using the water pump housing with the seal in the top at serial # 3780849, that was in 1973. After that they only have the rubber slinger. If your housing is showing ANY sign of melt, then replace it. When the housing melts the SS insert moves away from it's design position, and that reduces volume of water it can pump. That, in turn, will lead to less cooling water in the engine, and a possible overheat.....

Thanks for the reply. I'm going to replace it anyway but was unsure of the need for a seal. The new impeller kit came with all the seals.

Those seals might be for the water pump base, not the housing. What's the Merc part number for the kit?

Not sure where you got that number, (47-43026Q03) but a 47-43026Q06 is the impeller kit for a an Alpha I Gen II drive.
You should have a 47- 89984Q 5 kit.
