Raw Water Pump Leak- Fixed

After coming back from fishing, I noticed salt spray inside the engine compartment when I went to shut the batteries off.

Looks like the raw water pump (belt driven on the engine) is leaking right behind the pulley.

I was planning on taking tomorrow off and going fishing but looks like my plans might change.

Is this something I can do with the boat in the water? Is there a seal I can replace?

I will also check my manual.............running out to a family function.

Re: Raw Water Pump Leak

I've changed the impeller on my engine mounted raw water pump a couple of times - never had to worry about it leaking.... sorry I cannot be of further help in that regard. Is your pickup thru the hull or drawn through your outdrive? Do you have a valve to shut off the water? If your pump is below the water line you will need to be careful with the flooding of course.

Just plug the inlet hose and you can remove the pump in the water with no problem.
There are a couple of seals in there, along with bearings that the water has to go thru when they leak. In salt water, the tend to freeze (rust) up when they start leaking like that.

Hi Don..........I replaced the impeller and o-rings when I installed the longblock last fall..........is there a rebuild kit that includes seals/bearings? Or will I have to replace the entire assembly?

There isn't a kit that I know of, you would need the 2 bearings and 2 seals. Those seals aren't the orings you replaced while doing the impeller, they are like oil seals.
Those pumps run about 500 bucks anymore.

Re: Raw Water Pump Leak

Are the seals/bearings available?
Any special tools required?

Doesn't look too easy to remove the pump either........the only adjustment for belt tension I see is on a bracket located on the other side of the enbgine near the alternator.....and the hoses aren't very accesible either..........:(

Would you suggest I just bite the bullet and repalce the entire pump?

Re: Raw Water Pump Leak

Are the seals/bearings readily available?

Can they be ordered online?

Would a mercruiser dealer carry them in stock???

The seals and bearings are available, (PS: you also need item 13, the quad ring) along with the other seals and bearings mentioned earlier.
Places online or locally that are Merc dealers will either have them or can order them. That pump was used for MANY years.
Here is a link to manual 24 http://www-alt.mercurymarine.com/mnetdata/SERVICE/CRUISER/Servmanl/24/24covr1.pdf
Starting on page 6A12 it details how to rebuild the pump. Best thing is to read thru it and see if you can do the job and have the tools necessary.

Give it some time, it works, the download is about 13MB and may take awhile depending on your connection. What oem manual do you have for your engine?

Re: Raw Water Pump Leak

I just tried the site again and it does work. And, I downloaded the whole manual from the link I posted above. Sounds a lot like either your AV software, or some anti spam or some other type blocking software.

Above is the link to all the manuals. They do work. Check them out for yourself.

Re: Raw Water Pump Leak

Thanks Don............Section 6A explains it all............I was looking at 6B!

Not sure if I will have the ability to remove/replace the seals and bearings w/o a press..........

May just need to spen the extra $$...........I see the entire pump online for ~$350............
