Raw Water Pump Leaking

Hi All,

I have a 1998 Four Winns with a 5.0 GL (model# 502BPBYC) and took it out to the lake yesterday and noticed my raw water pump was leaking a little. Just dripping like a faucet, not streaming out or anything. It sits so low on the motor, it's hard for me to tell exactly where it's leaking, but I could tell it wasn't leaking at the gasket and it didn't seem like the housing, and it looked more like it was where the shaft would be. My question is, could this be a fix with one of the water pump kits I see for sale, or will I need to shell out the 281.67 for the Volvo Penta sea water pump (mod. 3857794). I couldn't find an alternative to the VP brand, but would be happy to know if there is one. Is there anyway to really test the pump if I take it off? It's belt driven, so I don't know if I could somehow attach a drill to it or something. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
-J

Re: Raw Water Pump Leaking

Thanks for the info Bond-o, I will follow the advice of replacing the entire unit, do you know if anyone makes an aftermarket pump for this motor? I find it kind of hard to believe that nobody does when it's as common of a motor as a Chevy 305. I know Marine applications are different though, so could be...

Re: Raw Water Pump Leaking

Could somebody verify that this pump 3857794 is the correct part for my motor. Even though my motor says Volvo Penta all over it, I'm told my engine model number (502bpbyc) is an OMC number. I have no problem replacing the part, I just want to confirm I'm getting the right part.

Thanks,
-J
