Rodbolt and Ray, thanks for the help on my engine rebuild. All worked out well. My concern is; when overhauling the carbs I found the floats adjusted very high. About 3/8 of an inch higher than the manual recommends. (not at all "level with the carb mating surface" as stated in the manual). I had a hole in a piston that I attributed to a lean condition. Now I have just re-adjusted my carbs to a leaner condition ...right? Do either of you know any reason that a carb float would be adjusted so high? It looked as though the floats were not even adjusted, just popped in right out of the box. Could a very rich condition cause a hole in a piston also??? These are Mikuni carbs.

I rebuilt a set of Yam carbs last year, and I'm guessing the suzzy carbs are the same.
When your checking your float heights, your holding your carb upside down. So in your case, your floats were 3/8" high, roll your carbs over upright, your floats are now 3/8" low.

Hope this helps... Canuck16.

Maybe I'm an idiot. If I turn the bowl upsidedown the adjustment tab will not touch the valve. The float will just flop down. ....Or.. should I push the float up till it touches the valve and measure it from there?

If the floats are too high when the bowl is upside down, they will shut off fuel too soon and possibly create a lean condition.

One last thing here, then I think I'll be ok. The needle valve has a spring loaded shaft sticking out of it. When adjusting the float level; should that shaft be depressed... or should the tab on the float just rest on the shaft?

Thanks ray, it looks like I did it right. I think I'm good to go.
