Just purchased a Ray Marine DS400X for $260. The price looked right, and the specs looked good as well. This is my first fish finder so, wanted to get some opinions, in terms of bang for the buck.

Also, in the installation diagrams (Transom Mount) it depicts the transducer being starboard. I have my kicker on that side so will need to put it on the port side. Didn't know if there was any issues with the turbulence caused by the right hand propellor.

Also I am assuming that the transducer can be fully submerged.

Thanks in advance for you help.

I've read that putting it on the port side will give you problems. Not sure at what speed you'll notice it though. Probably not when you're on "kicker power"...... Buying a Raymarine soon meself!

If you want a neat safe job done, mount it inside the hull according to the installation instructions. NO interference problems then. Check if you can mount it with RTV to elimanate air bubbles and make replacement easier.

The DS400X has a temperature sensor and paddle wheel for the speedometer on the transom mounted transducer. If you don't care about the speedo or water temp then mounting inside the hull is a viable option.

Re: RayMarine DS400X Opinions

Thanks all, I've decided to put it on the transom, to take advantage of the speedo, and temp. Started to think about fishing for spring Blackmouth Salmon, and you need to get it down to about 150ft. So decided to get a downrigger as well. Got myself the Scotty 1106 which has an extendable boom. Took the boat out into the sound, for two days of fishing, on Saturday and Sunday. Didn't have any luck, so won't be able justify it to the Mrs. Guess I'll need to hide it, until I do :)

Ratfish, I picked it up at West Marine. Great thing was I went to the Everett Boat show and got a coupon from the West Marine booth for $20. Went back to the store and they gave me a refund. So I'm pretty happy with the price.
