Re: Raystown

Was going to hit the lake over the weekend, but ended up going to the Penn State Football game instead. Leaving for Ghana tomorrow, so I am done until November ... then the fun begins! Stripers should be going nuts and the buck should be in full rut.

Re: Raystown

Water temp is dropping (surface temp of 72 degrees on Friday) and the leaves are turning already ... about 2 or 3 weeks earlier than last year 9probably because it has been so dry). Corps is starting to drop the water level and it is down about 3 feet already.

Unless the leaves drop excessively fast because of the dry weather, the next couple of weeks should put us about peak time and should be beautiful with the leaves.

Fish are starting to stack in columns.

Re: Raystown

Raystown is my favorite place to boat with Nancy's camp being my favorite spot. I'd love to get together with some of you and plan a "raft up" next year. Im hoping to get one more trip to the James Creek ramp before the weather gets too cold. Im in the middle of a re-power and im really pushing to get the boat back in the water one more time this year.

Man, that looks awesome! We've been talking about heading over there for the past 2 years, but it's about 4 hrs away & we just haven't made it yet. Nancy's campground is right up at the top of my list, but the way we pack for camping, I'd be concerned about fitting it all in the boat! Guess I just need a bigger boat :)

You wont be disappointed. It's well worth the 4 hour trip, especially if you are going to stay at Nancy's camp. One suggestion, though, is to plan to be there for at least one weekday. During the week, the boat traffic is severly reduced and you can actually take the time to cruise the lake and really take in the sites. Also, if you have kids, (even if you dont), make a point to feed the carp at seven points.

James Creek and Aitch boat launches are close enough that you can make multiple trips to get all your gear to the camp ground (just a couple miles). Nancy's is a nice place and they have a few really nice and relatively level sites and the privy is usually well maintained.

It is beautiful and the leaves that were changing have dropped, but the others are still green. The rain we had has slowed the color process down. Hoping to get out on Monday and maybe do a little fishing and cruising. Will see what happens with weather and other things.

Also agree about the weekdays, although this time of year the weekend crowds are non-existant also.

Re: Raystown

I have made many a second trip back to the dock from Nancy's to pick up camping stuff, heck we used to take a boat load of firewood. If you are into tent camping Nancy's is as good as it gets, boat in and primitive, but always a blast.

Weekends in the Summer are a complete PITA. If I go in the Summer I go at night and leave when I see the first Jet Ski or find a quiet cove to spend the day in. If you go through the week you will have the place to yourselves, do try to fit in one or two weekdays to see the place without the nuthouse boat traffic.

I should clarify that I don't camp at Nancy's anymore, but do spend an occasional night on my pontoon. We also have a camper on a sight at Shy Beaver. My brother and his buddy spent a couple of days with my boat at Nancy's last year and had a blast.

My older bro rents a very nice cabin a few minutes from Shy Beaver launch every August for a week and we make a family outing of it, like in the old days at Nancy's only with beds and Dish Network.

I live real close to the lake and drive from one end to the other every day for work. If I can help anyone with pre trip legwork or phone numbers or the contact info for our rental cabins just ask.

The big crowds start and stop like clockwork on Memorial Day and Labor Day, although they lingered for a few weekends after Labor Day this year.

Re: Raystown

Like many have said...............Raystown is worth the trip..............as long as you avoid the crowd.

Was on her Labor Day weekend. Actually wasn't as bad, traffic-wise, as I thought it might be. But it was windy and my little 17 footer wouldn't fit between them or across them. We took a beating. :D

Never camped there as my uncle has a darned luxurious "camp" just a few miles away.

We still had a good time Labor Day. Always put in at Snyder run and spend the day pretty much wide open from one end to the other, making the gasman happy.

We tied off at 7-Points for a spell and walked up to Clem's BBQ (YUM!!!!) then the kids fed the carp and we swapped a few passengers for some more cruising.

Was hoping to get back up for a leaf cruise. But archery season and weather have pretty much eliminated that. I think it's Stabil time. :(

Would enjoy hooking up with some forums members next year for a tie up or some Clem's.

I launch from weaver falls and haven't once had any traffic issues or parking, even on labor day.Its the shallow end of lake 5-7ft.All the no wake coves are a plus.Makes for a quiet weekend deep back in cove.I usually get up there 5-10 times a season.Let me know when and what weekend we all can get together and tie up,I make some mean burn a_$_$ chili.

Re: Raystown

Leaves definitely wierd this year ... peak was about last week into this week. Down hill start is now. I'm about 8 miles from 7-Points so I avoid the lake at all costs on the weekends (except for the calls for boating accident/injuries or more often bike accidents on the Aligrippis Trail). I am always up for meeting with fellow iboaters ... every encounter so far has been SUPER!

Re: Raystown

We all need to keep it in mind for next year.

As far as the crowds go..............we need to go in late March like me and a buddy did this year.

We both had picked up boats over the winter and were going to be dragging them on a 2700 mile, Canadian wilderness fishing trip in June. So we couldn't wait to get them on the water to see what bugs needed working out before we left for Canada.

We met an hour from Raystown at 8:00 AM. It was 20 degrees. Made the run to Huntingdon. I needed to stop at Wally By Golly for some rope and something else. No arguments. Came out of Wal Mart and I said "you know..... we oughta get some breakfast". No arguments. Finished breakfast and I said "you know.......we oughta go to the supermarket and grab something to take along for lunch". No argument. :D

It was right around 11:00 when we were both unloaded & motors running. 36 degrees air temp, I believe. There was ice behind the dock at Snyder Run. We had the place almost all to ourselves. Can you believe it????? :D

It actually got into the low 50's by the time we pulled them out. As long as we kept the walktrhoughs closed, it wasn't too bad. But I did go home and have a guy make me a bow cover. ;)

We are up there every weekend from April to Oct. We stay out on the lake from end of May to Sept. So if you like to meet up some time just leave us know.

Re: Raystown

Count us in after May. We will be up every weekend then. Not sure if Clems will be back next year. That is what we heard.
