Re-assembling fuel filter

I have a 1980 9.9 HP Johnso Model J10SELCSE.

I took the fuel filter and fuel pump off and disassembled it to see if it needed replacement. I have a digital camera I normally would use to help with memory, but this little bugger came apart so easily and quickly I soon had parts everywhere and wouldn't know what to take a pciture of anyway.

My problem is that I was not able to get back to re-asembling for a week or so. Now, as I look at the parts, I cant remember the order of assembly. I have downloaded the copy of "Rebuilding the old 9.9/15 HP Fuel Pump". It is very helpful but does not show a diagram of the sequence of parts all together. I think I could complete the assembly if I knew which component was on bottom, i.e., facing the metal housing of the motor.

does anyone have such a diagram they could share with me? Or help in any way is appreciated.

Thanks,

Re: Re-assembling fuel filter

Eddie,

Try here... http://www.sschapterpsa.com/ramblings/Rebuilding_fuelpump.htm

Tip: In step #7, they show the use of 2 screws to help 'stack' the parts to keeps things aligned. I find it easier to use 2 long thin finish nails (with the heads cut off) nailed into a pine board. After the parts are stacked and the fuel pump body closed, just slide the pump up and off the nails.

Thanks, I like the idea of using nails with heads cut off. I tried using the screws and things just get too wobbly. The link you suggsted is one i had already, but I will study it a lot closer. My biggest concern right now is that I can't remember what is on the bottom of the stack. For example, in the "Rebuild..." article, what would the flip side show on the last photograph on the last page, just above isntruction #23? The photo shows the outer most part of the fule pump, i.e., what you see when you look at the motor.

Thanks again for your help, it is very much appreciated.

Re: Re-assembling fuel filter

OK, if you goto picture #4, look at parts labled P and Q. Part P is the base and part Q is the gasket that goes between the finished pump and the moter powerhead. That fuel pump to powerhead gasket seals the crankcase pressure/vacuum cycles to the hole in the pump base.

It's a bit late to mention at this point but, I usually draw a diagonal line across the top of the fuel pump with a gold marker. This places a gold mark across each of the gaskets etc and clearly shows the 'order' of original placement.
