Re-paint only a small strip on hull

I am working on restoring a boat that has a blue stripe down each side of the hull. I wish to change this stripe to green. The current coat on the hull is in incredible shape (may need a buff here and there) but free from knicks. DO i need to redo the whole hull or can i get away with just the stripe? I assume i need to sand it down, prime it and paint. Any suggestions?

If the paint is in good condition you should be able to sand it down with 220 grit and repaint over it. It would probably be best to use the same type of paint that was put down first, i.e., Laquer, acrylic enamel, base/clear, etc.

You do not need to sand it down to the primer, just rough the surface well to promote adhesion.

I am not a painter but this is what I have learned from working around paint shops.

I will have the opportunity to test my advise when I repaint my stripe!

Is this the original gel coat, or is it painted?


You can paint as little or as much of it as you want.

I recently did the same thing you are wanting to do. The stripe I painted over was painted on, it wasn't gelcoat, and it was not original to the boat. I have no idea what kind of paint it was, but it was in good shape with few nicks and dings, and there weren't any adhesion issues. I just scuffed it up really well with 400 grit wet-or-dry sandpaper on and electric finish sander. After sanding, I blew the surface off with compressed air, then wiped it all down with an acetone soaked rag a couple of times to make sure it was very clean. Then I taped off the areas to be painted and covered everything else with plastic. I sprayed mine, so you won't have to cover everything with plastic if you're not spraying.

Welcome to Iboats Ogitec..

If its gel you can do one of Many things

Some just sand and paint.. some sand/prime/paint..

What do you intend on painting it with ( what product ? ) that would determine your final grit and/or primer.. 220 might be a bit agressive for some of the more high quality paints.

Or just re-gel it with the color of your choice

Thank you all for the replies! Bigboatinokie your boat looks mint and is exactly what i would like to do with mine. Hey doc, is there an easy way to determine if it was paint on after or if it is in the gelcoat? Pretty sure this was original stuff on it but want to make sure. And i am very new to the boat renos.
