I know it's far off, but when the boating season is done for the year (early October), I think I'll build a wheeled stand, yank the motor, and store it inside since I don't have inside storage for the boat itself. Mostly to keep it warm and protected from the -30C weather but partly for tinkering.

While it's off for storage, I'll pull off all the components that weren't originally painted (carbs, wiring, stator, power packs, coils etc.) and and do a re-spray, same as OE, as well as a general detailing of the whole thing. I'd like it to be the original silver colour. Any ideas about a paint match code somewhere? There's a place locally that specializes in making rattle cans with custom automotive paint - not cheap though.

Decals are a 9/10, so I'll just mask them.

Most places can color match take a piece and they should match it. Or you can buy the paint from the dealer in a rattle can just give them the model #. One thing I found out about color matching is buff the piece out so it's nice and clean and match in the sunlight.

Invader2a.jpg I had an 82 140 back in 1982, I remember the color looking impressive. Boat was rated for a 90, so I stuck the 140 on it.

Nice bateau! Wonder if the 140s always had darker paint. All the more reason to do my rig in 90 silver. ;-)

I take after my grandfather - he had a 12' aluminium cartopper that was rated for 10hp and he had a 15hp Viking (Eaton's re-branded 'rude http://richardlpaquette.ca/images/15D12V.jpg) on it. I remember as a kid I'd snag shotgun on Grampy's boat and my little brother would ride with dad in our 12' with a '73 9-1/2 'rude. We'd both be running WOT but the Viking put 100 yards on them every 400. That thing just skated.

You need to spend a little time on the original factory parts website. When you get into it and then into the 1982 140 parts lists, there is a page with all the paint codes and part numbers and generic industry codes. Whatever you need to match you can find there on the "paint" page. Check out this factory website: epc.brp.com

For what it's worth, 1980s Mercedes diamant blau is a dead on match -- to my eye -- for the early to mid '80s Evinrude blue -- if doing the blue. It's a metallic silver/blue that really pops -- can probably see a patch of that somewhere if you google it. I'm thinking that might be the silver you have in mind, but not sure -- might be the color of the leg on jimmbo's motor. (My old mb is recently gone, but I have the paint and a couple of '80s outboards to use it on.)

AutoZone here does some color matching, but their equipment and technique is a little unpredictable -- although nice to have available. They are pretty good at tracking down auto colors, and mixing quarts or spray cans -- maybe something similar in your area. nymarine is always a good outboard source.

My donor was a '79 140S. I always liked the styling and colour combinations of the '70s and '80s 'rudes. The Johnsons not so much in green and white.

In '85 when I was hanging motors, we had a new shop manager who claimed to have worked on the stunt 135 used in the James Bond "Live And Let Die" film. Not sure I believe that...
