re-sealing a 1965 40 hp selectric

My lower unit oil is emulsified, and I need to reseal it. It is a 1965 40 hp selectric. It's been awhile since I've had one apart, but my recollection was it was similar to the manual in that there is a prop shaft and drive shaft seal, an o-ring where the prop shaft housing meets the drive shaft housing, and a spaghetti seal around the prop shaft .. similar to the manual shift (without the shift rod o-ring).<br /><br />I was about to order a seal kit from this site:<br /><br /> http://www.sterndrive.info/outboardmotor/johnson_outboard_seal_kits.html <br /><br />but the picture for their kit for the electric shift (87621) doesn't look anything like the one for the manual shift (87607) .. and is nearly twice as much money. thoughts?<br /><br />Thanks

The kit in the link you posted looks correct to me. The electric shift has no spaghetti seal between the two gearcase halves, since the gearcase doesn't split in half. It's just a one-piece elongated football thing and a pain to work on. Gotta feed everything in from the rear (prop) end. I'm still waiting on my seal kit (have been since late May; iShopMarine must be backlogged bigtime). I expect to get 4 little o-rings for the four bearing head screws, a big o-ring for the bearing head, a big o-ring that goes between the upper and lower gearcase sections, and a couple different-size o-rings for the waterpump housing to mate to the leg. Should also be a propshaft seal and two driveshaft seals - one for the upper gearcase section and one for the top of the waterpump housing. In the pic you linked to there are two extra o-rings. At least one is for a little extension thing that goes between the water pump housing and the leg extension on longshaft models.

thanks!<br /><br />These guys say they have a kit now, but it's spendy. I think I may do a very light pressurization and drop the lower unit in a big bucket and see where the bubbles come from. MANY years ago, I used to be able to get a tar-like black goo from the johnson dealer that I could run along the seals and pretty much seal anything. Anyone remember that stuff .. and if so, can you still get it?
