Im in the process of redoing the teak on my boat. The previous owner used Sikkens sealer. It looks ok but its to dark.. I've heard good reviews on "teak-gaurd"
Anybody have any suggestions? Tips?

Sherm,

I have never used it but it looks interesting. Anything you use will require maintenance of some kind. It all depends on how often you are willing to do the follow-up cleaning and coating. Give it a shot and let us know how well it works. Share some pics.

Re: Re-Teak project..any suggestions?

Hi Guys:

My boat has a deal of teak trim. Fortunately, it was never finished with a varnish like product from the factory, so it has never peeled or chipped. I have given it 2 or more coats of teak oil several times each season and it looks great.

Yeah I agree with you Kilo. I have found a good teak cleaner followed by a couple coats of a good teak oil works well. But of course sometimes you are forced to use other methods depending on where the teak is located, ease of access, other things around it, inside vs. outside, etc.

Well as of today I have spent 6 hours wet sanding on the teak. I managed to break down both cuddy doors without any problems. If I had to sum up this job so far I'd say it SUCKS! I hate sanding but the end result will be worth it. I will post some pictures shortly.

Sherm,

Careful with the sanding. If the teak has a poly/varnish coating on it then just dry sand enough to get that off. If no poly coating or varnish then just use a teak cleaner. It will strip off all the old oils and such and leave the wood kind of grayish colored. It comes back to life with a little teak oil after that.

Whatever you plan to coat your teak with ( aside from teak oil ) wipe it with acetone before you start coating.

This will remove oils that have surfaced and make a better bond.

Oh..I like Minwax helmsmanns spar polythane :) .

Re: Re-Teak project..any suggestions?

Thanks for the input. I decided to go with teak gaurd and they're recomendation is to sand away all the stain thats on the teak. It had sikkens sealer on it no varnish or poly. It looks good. Can't wait to get it done though. But I'm not russing it.

Welcome to Iboats cmcbob..

Your wood was probably coated with an Epithane.

You should probably start a new thread so we dont have a fork in the road on this one ;) .

Re: Re-Teak project..any suggestions?

Dr. Yacht, Don't fret. Not going to use sikkens. I hate it. For 1 its way to dark. I think I'm going to go with Teak Gaurd. I've done a little research and it sounds like the way to go. Its suppose to hold up better than teak oil but its not a stain. They say you can get a season out of it before having to re-oil. We'll see. When I get it done I'll be posting pictures of it.
