Re: re-wiring 70hp johnson

Hi Jim....welcome to iboats!

Why not just trouble shoot the system and find out why you have no spark? Not any real need to change out the whole engine harness....unless of course it's shot. If there is no spark on any cylinder, chances are good the pack is gone. Look at the pack on the 82 and see if it has the same connections as the 84. If so, swap them out and check for spark. I don't have the book in front of me but the pack on the 84 may very well be a new part number for the 82's pack. Nothin to lose but a lot of work.

Re: re-wiring 70hp johnson

Thanks for the welcome !
I have not dug in real deep yet but the power pack is most likley the problem as no spark on all 3 cyl.the packs have different connectors as one plugs into the coils the other appears to be fastened to the power pack with screws,if this helps the model #of the 82 is j75tlcnb and the 84 is e70tlcrd. and yes i know i need a manual, thanks for your patience with a greenhorn,by the way where is rayland,I was from elyria, ohio

Re: re-wiring 70hp johnson

Good morning Jim. Rayland is just across the River from Wheeling, WVa. Just a little north.

I'm on my way to the shop right now. I'll check your model numbers out and see what I can come up with. Let ya' know a little later. Does the coils using the screws possibly have a sticker on them saying "Rapair"?

Jim....both engines use the same power pack and coils. So I see no problem in switch both out.
