I am re-wiring my trolling motor in my boat. I have a 17' ranger 330-v and i have a minn kota maxxum 24 volt 70 lbs. thrust trolling motor. Right now it only has 10 or 12 gauge wire in it, I'm not sure which but I know it's one of those 2 sizes so I'm hoping when I get the bigger wire installed I will get more power out of my trolling motor. I was wondering what size marine battery cable I should use to re-wire the trolling motor? I am guessing it will take 2 20-22 foot wires for the power and the ground. I am down to either 4 gauge or 6 gauge wire??? Everyone I have talked to had the opinion that the 6 gauge is all I need. I am hoping 6 gauge is okay because it really is a lot cheaper. What wire would you use to re-wire this trolling motor and do you all think 6 gauge would be sufficient enough? Also do you think I will gain any power from my trolling motor after going to that much bigger of a wire? Any help would be appreciated.

Re: re-wiring trolling motor?

If you had 12 gauge wire and never had a wire heat issue then 6 gauge will be adequate. If it is 10 gauge, it will be less of a problem than 12 gauge. Fact is, if you change the wire size chances are you will not see ANY difference in power except at full power when there is maximum current draw. The motor draws what it needs at the various speeds. It is not that bigger wire "forces" more current down the line. Bigger wire can carry more current. Sort of like carrying water. You can carry more in a big bucket than a small one.
