i have got a 83 80hp marnier, with muffs on runs good fires right up, i have new tanks, fuel line, bulb, and fuel connectors , plugs. cleaned the carbs, had the timming set and linkages set, water pump, lower unit, prop, and still having issues with it running in the water:confused: most of the time 75% it will fire right up go in reverse does fine but as soon as i go to take off forward it dies then got to choke it and whirl it over and fires up in neural runs fine until try to go forward again falls on is face and then if i am lucky it will take off and do good some time or might have to re-pete the process. yesterday run real well but today was a headache battery went dead on us and had to be towed in:( to me its got to be something simple or it seems like it would act up all the time its just worrying me because its a family outing and i cant walk on water to get help.. now when it takes off it does real good while moving cant ask for it to run any better. like i said in reverse it has never died just forward  and when i go to load it most of the time it will idle up to the trailer and go to give it gas to push it up all the way it just falls on its face and dies. any and all help will greatly be appreciated:)

ok worked on it a little while to day......pulled the plugs after running it on muffs more or less leting it idle they was wet and had some carbon deposits on them and sprayed some carb cleaner in the carbs from about 6 inches or so the top carp it would kill the motor as so as it got to it......bottom carb could spray it it and it would take it awhile to kill the motor....so does this mean my bottom carb is dirty or clogged causing it to load up or what???

In general, with most 2-cycle type engine, you need to have a load on the motor, to correctly set the low speed jetting (the same holds true on the high speed circuit, but most motors have a fixed high speed jet). If you rebuilt the carbs, then the low speed idle mixture needs to be reset. You can get it set to idle fine on muffs, or even a tub of water, however in those case's the motor is not under load. It needs to be done, on the lake, in the water, in gear.
Most of your problems seem to all suround a low speed idle mixture issue, yet I did not notice a fuel pump rebuild in your post, and yes a bad fuel pump could mimick those symptoms too. As for the battery issue, that I can say is not related to carbs, might be a stator problem, which could cause some troubles as well, but normally those would come into effect at high speed, like loss of power, boging out, and down right splutering to a dead stop.

went and got some telf-lawn paste (spelling ?) put on all the threads what has to to with the gas line got some more sea foam and cleaned the carbs again...run good with muffs. went to the water same story but not as bad started adjusting on the timing screw and it started sounding better(seemed like not loading up as bad and not missing)(more of a ding-ding instead burr-putt-putt-bur) i think i backed it out 3 to 4 turns so now it will idull in gear and hammer on it and does fine. but when loading it died 3 times then it done fine. now on the timing will this be fine or am causing another problem like i said before at the shop i took it to said the timing was off and they set it do you think they was off because i dont know if i advanced or retarded it. i know how to work on cars not boats but i guess they have the same prince able on running just a difference way to adjusting them... and i am going to check the fuel pump because i did not know that there was one, i thought that is what the bulb was for. i will be back later to up date.. thanks 4 all the info on the matter i am trying everything

I wouldnt worry to much about the battery. I'm sure the only reasonthat died was the3 constant restarting. Since you have done almost everything. I would check compression on all cylinders. Poor compression mean your fuel pump wont work properly. If you have good compression try a rebuild kit for your fuel pump. Should only cost a 10 - 15$.
It sounds like a horrible fault to fix.
I also agree witht eh poster who said that the carbs need to be balanced at idle and under load. If this wasnt done it should be. There is quite a few guides to how to do this on the forum. Good luck

just pulled the pump (fuel) 3 bolts and nun of them was much more than finger tight. gasket and diefram looked good now its got 2 round brass pieces in there and got a 3prong thing on the back, 1 was facing in and the other was facing out is this right or what? on the top was facing in and bottom was facing out and i am going to buy a kit what does it come with all of this or just the gasket ? do you think this might have contributed to the problem with it being lose? but never seen any gas leaking out.

Yes, they are the check valves. In some kits they are included, and in others they are extra, just have to check when you order you fuel pump kit. NOte make sure you put them back the same way when you rebuild it.
