1985 50hp Mercury outboard two stroke, 4 cylinder, long shaft. Can I use my Fluke multi meter to read rpm from the tach plug at the front of the control box?

I have an inductive pickup for the meter, but it would be easier from the plug on the control if possible. Also, my manual hasn't come in yet, any idea what the WOT rpm range for this engine is? Engine is currently outfitted with a 13 pitch 3 blade prop and I just want to make sure previous owner didn't make a prop selection that could cost me the engine over time.

Thanks!
