ive got the motor ready for parts and reassembly just wanted to make sure im not missing anything before ordering.any replies would be great.
parts list:
4 coils (all were cracked)
4 sets of piston rings
rebuild gasket set (what gaskets might not be included?)
4 o-rings for upper and lower bearing housing
2 crankcase seals
conn.rod bearing at wrist pin(cause of failure resulting in rebuild)
conn.rod (pitted badly at wrist pin due to bearing cage failure)
1 piston (damaged removing wrist pin,sux by the way)
thermostat gaskets (removed for inspection, all seems fine)
seal,lower unit to exhaust housing

does the rebuild gasket set contain powerhead to exhaust housing gasket? please tell me what i may be missing. i cant wait to get started putting this baby back together. gonna get to painting once parts have been ordered.thanks a bunch!

Re: ready for parts,missing anything?

OEM gasket sets come with all the orings, seals and gaskets needed, even t-stat gaskets. Don't know where yours is coming from.

I would also rebuild carbs, two carb kits and replace the water pump and I think I would opt for the whole water pump kit and not just the impeller.

Got gasket sealing compound? And a good marine grease? You'll need them as well as some TCW-3 oil to lube up the holes and rings for reassembly.

Re: ready for parts,missing anything?

thanks for the quik response.carbs and impeller were done about 4 hours of run time before failure. should they be ok?
i was thinking of ishopmarine.com for parts. whats the consensus of these folks? they give options for omc as well as sierra and dmc for most parts. what can i get aftermarket and still be ok when it comes to reliability? thanks again fellers

Re: ready for parts,missing anything?

Just my point of view here TS....I would at least stick with the OEM gasket set. Then you will be sure in having the gaskets you need. Not sure what all comes in the aftermarket sets. Are the t-stats new or have they been in there a while?

Do you have any idea of what caused the malfunction? From your post, a failed bearing cage....that was the result of the malfunction....but did you ever figure out why the cage failed?

no ,just figured it was from a fatigued part.being that its 34 yrs.old. i agree about the gasket set.would the piston come w/ the wrist pin?dont want to order one if its included.
there was clearly a crack in the bearing cage which allowed 8 of the 16 roller bearing pins and cage material to enter the combustion chamber.which was in turn colliding w/ sparkplug electrode.

Best to replace the T-stat. For the money, it's a cheap insurance for your rebuilt engine...

Re: ready for parts,missing anything?

go OEM on the gaskets. I had quite a few aftermarket head gasket failures due to poor steel in the aftermarket stuff and only use OEM now.
replace the rodbolts dont reuse the old ones.
I replace the bottom crank bearing anytime the crank is out.
that bearing takes a load in 2 directions and fails more often.
normal cause of wristpin failure is rust.
if your near the portsmouth VA area Ron's marine can help you with about anything you need and stocks quite a bit of stuff.
he has been OMC/BRP for about 35 years.

Re: ready for parts,missing anything?

thanks for the input!actually ordered my parts this evening from hampton roads outboards in newport news.our local johnnyrude repair joint.he was also able to find the vintage conn. rod. altogether $800 in parts. should have them next wed. which means next friday probably.! cant wait. im thinkin ill wait to paint until power head is assembled. supposed to be in the 30's so not optimal paint conditions. ive tapped all holes on this thing. degreased it. all gasket residue removed. 11 broken bolts removed, tapped or helicoiled. bought 30 new stainless bolts to replaced broke and badly rusted ones. i have a crappy wire splice to fix some jackleg made. and thats about it. im just hoping now that the reassembly goes smooth. ive got the factory manual and read it tonight. only things i wont have replaced is timer base, stator and power pack. all right im startin to ramble ,ill shut up. if youve got any tricks or pointers for reassembly please share. thanks for reading!
