Hi folks, i just downloaded sticky 4 and 6 trying to figure out which sterndrive i have. Looks like i have sticky 4. My question is sticky 6 is Alpha 1. Sticky 4 says One drive. My question is, is that what this is called a mercruiser One drive? Is there another name it goes by because it seems that would be easily confused with an Alpha 1. What do you pro's call it. Pre alpha something? Anyone know what I would best be calling it for parts ordering. Thank you.

Re: Real easy question here for the pro's

The one drive is what a lot of people call a "Pre Alpha" which is silly, the TR drive was a pre Alpha, in that it came out before the Alpha I outdrive.
In a nutshell, the 1 drive was used from 1967 to 1982. Then there was a Revision of the 1 drive. It was know as the R drive (83-84). Then there was a Major Revision (see note), known as the MR (1985 only) Then the Alpha I came out (86 thru 90). In 91 the Alpha I Gen II drive came out. We are still with the Gen II drive today.

NOTE:
Will have to check the "Major" for being the proper word but it was something like that. But the dates for the MR are correct for sure.

Merc one drive is also pre alpha. Then came alpha one in the mid 80s. Alpha one gen 2 early 90's.

What do you have. what year is your boat.

Aw nuts, my motor is a 470 mercruiser 1983, they dont show that in sticky 6 but they do in sticky 4. The drive doesnt look like 4 though, it looks identical to 6. Any chance they left the 470 off the list of engines sticky 6 applies too?

The 1 drive is the 1 drive... and you need..... manuals 1 and or 2 for that one depending on the actual year of yours.

That is SERVICE MANUAL #4 or #6. Not sticky. There are only 3 stickies at the top of this forum.

Being a 1983 470, you would need a drive serial number to be sure what drive you have, Many 83 boats had 82 engines and drive setup.

anything before alpha1 is pre alpha.
anything before alpha1 is a 1 drive.

the progression of events was
mc-1, 1 drive.
1r, a revised 1 drive. introduce in 1983, used in 83 and 84
1mr, a major revised 1 drive, introduced in 1985
alpha1. introduced in 1986

don't know about how many years it covers. but on a 72 1 drive. the s/n is lightly etched into the upper under the mercruiser sticker. likely port side.

i use s/m #2 for my 75, #1 for my 72, figure your year and get the appropriate manual. #6 is alpha1. guessing yours would be 3 and 4.

if my years or info is wrong or misleading, someone please correct me to the op...

Thats sticky 6 in the subdirectory of service manuals. You guys and this forum are invaluable. I am thinking since i am in sticky 6 that i am the R according to Dons chronology. If you were local (Stuart FL area) I would be buying a round. For mediocre shade tree's like me this place is incredible.

I believe I am service manual #6 1drive R. 1983 470 mercruiser. The sterndrive in there looks identical. Just dont like the fact that they dont list the 470 but ive seen stranger things printed. Thank you all. You guys are the best.

Got it, i have the R drive (i guess its not a 1R just an R drive). JustJason thanks for the chart. That puts my mind at ease. Don I am getting the hang of the using the resources you have here. Just getting used to what you call them. Stickys vs service manuals. Sorry, please be patient.

Got it, i have the R drive (i guess its not a 1R just an R drive).

R and I-R are the same thing. The R is a redesigned I drive, hence the name I-R then I-MR.
The original I drive back in 63 was only used in 63, Then in 67 came what is now called the MC-I or more commenly known as the I drive (one drive)
Forget about the 63 I drive, that was an Oh Sh** first try.

Don't worry about the sticky/manual thing, you will figure it out. Stickies are just posts that are STUCK to the top of the forum and stay there. They are basically just a lot of information used by this particular forum.
