Wife and I both needed our driver licenses renewed so we went ahead and got the real ID. Was not a big deal, worst part was the extra 30$. From all the griping I heard about the process we figured it’d be an ordeal. Place was packed but we were in and out pretty quickly. Lots of folks I know aren’t going to bother with it.

Surprised your drivers license isn’t Real ID compliant.

Our (MD) driver’s license are compliant. Only unlicensed residents need a Real ID card

I don't fly. The irony in how I have to get one though is they change the stamp on my drivers license from saying "not for real ID purposes" to the real ID star... using the same pieces of paper I have to bring to renew it anyway....

Not everyone who can get a drivers license can be allowed to get a passport, or real ID. Like criminals on parole or probation who are not allowed to leave a certain area. That's why drivers licenses cannot automatically be real id.

Real ID on driver’s license is more than just a flying aid … you need a Real ID (or passport) to gain access into many federal buildings as well. I expect more places will require a Real ID now that more people have it.

True. But my other issued IDs let me into those state/federal offices without needing to ever show a driver's license. Everyone sees my wallet and thinks I'm money bags or something.

And my understanding is they pretty much hand out real ID to anyone. Some felonies will bar you from it... but I know of people who can't hold a passport who got real ID no problem. So... I don't exactly believe they do anything more than a normal driver's license. I do believe they are just looking to make sure the person behind it is real and not made up....

The REAL ID Act, passed by Congress in 2005, enacted the 9/11 Commission’s recommendation that the Federal Government “set standards for the issuance of sources of identification, such as driver's licenses and identification cards.”

The Act and implementing regulations establish minimum security standards for license issuance and production and prohibit federal agencies from accepting for certain official purposes noncompliant driver’s licenses and identification cards.

Not compliant here in Pa. The thing that gets me is the background check for concealed carry permit is way more extensive than just proving who you are with social security card and birth certificate but it still can’t be used in place of real ID. Makes no sense.

Real ID is a Federal program. Required to enter Federally protected and or secured facilitates. If your CCP is State administered, you have your answer as too why not

FWIW: On top of proof of Identity, (Passport or US birth certificate) and SSN number, I was required to present two documents to show proof of residency in the State of Maryland

Going to be a lot of upset people at airport security come May 7

Every airline that you buy a ticket from has had this real ID thing date and warning for at least the past year. Today I am not sure that you can even buy a ticket for any date after real ID is required without proof that you have real ID. So only for the very ignorant will this be a surprise

Getting real ID just isn’t a big deal. When you renew your DL just get the real id dl. Then you are set, no problems, no hassles.
I fly frequently, if I didn’t have real id then Id have to carry my passport. I do not want to carry my passport unless I absolutely have to, don’t want to increase the chances of losing it. Who knows what else may require real id in the future. For me I got it, no problems.

Up to the last couple of months, flew 6-7 times a month

Order all my tickets using my aps. Login automatically enters my frequent flier, TSA Pre-screen and pass port info, if applicable. Don't remember seeing anything about Real ID.

Just tried booking a flight to Chicago on May 12 with a May 14 return. No mention there either.
Perhaps the system is "smart" enough to know it's not an issue for me.

Once had a chinese customer once demand that I turn over my passport until the Project was complete. Thought I started an International incident...lol

Yeah...Kansas too is automatically a 'real i.d.' license. I used to travel extensively on business (3 - 5 times a month) so I always just used my passport, as others have noted as well.

Has nothing to do with the amount of time it takes.
Not sure where your from here in Montgomery county we submit the paperwork for a full background check. Last time it took over a week to get called into the courthouse to finish the process.
Actually way back in the day when I first got my CCP in Montgomery county finger prints were required. That’s no longer the case.
Regardless a full background check is not required for a Real ID. Just show your BC and SS card and you get it. I just went through it.

When this first started the rmv needed proof of residency such as a utility bill or such. The poor folks at the Comcast office next door were flooded with people coming in for a copy of their bill. It was madness for a while.
I still haven’t gotten mine as every time I plan to it gets extended but I think its time to just go and get we done and be done with it.

In my county, knowing the sheriff helps with the CCP ... it takes me 2 min to fill out the paperwork, 2 min for the background check and 2 min for the picture and print out and I am out the door with the renewed permit ...
