Hello, New to forum and just looking for some user input. I have a 07' 15hp and a 150hp and I am looking for realistic hours to change/replace the water pump impellers. They were new to me last year....15 unknown hours but barely used and 150 75hrs. I have/will put at least 1500hrs/250hrs annually on the motors based on last year. Both motors have great outlet streams and I have not noticed any change at all from when I got them. I do all my own maintenance. I have no problem with the book specs generally, but I am not robotic and a slave to what manufacturers suggest on any motor vehicle. Just wondering what others are doing and seeing done on the impeller replacement in the real world.

Re: Realistic Impeller Change Hrs

I did my first water pump impeller change on my 90HP Yamaha a few weeks ago and was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was, took maybe a couple of hours, but just taking my good time and trying not to screw anything up. All bolts and screws came right apart with no stuck/corrosion problems, used a wire brush to clean all bolt threads and re-assembled everything with waterproof marine grease. If you use your motor in saltwater a lot then I think it's especially important to do the impeller on a regular basis to be sure your bolts don't get corroded and break off when you try to remove them. You can search and find some instructional videos on "outboard water pump replacement" on the web that will help you a lot. Good Luck!

Re: Realistic Impeller Change Hrs

Robert....thanks for the input. I will be changing them to stay ahead of the game as maintenance saves repairs for sure. Don't have the time to be down most of the year. I could deal with a once a year, but have been hearing suggestions and "recomendations" of every 2-400 hours. Both motors are used in very clear/clean freshwater (now) and had been used about 50% Salt/Fresh prior to me owning them. No corossion at all visible on any part of motors.

Have not specified engine brand, brands like Yamaha, Evinrude wear impellers faster than Tohatsu/Nissan ones, lasts much longer easily double the 300 hours manual recommends changing.

Yep, I believe it's a 2 hour job first time and a 1 hour job from then on. In fresh water every 2 or 3 years should be fine, depending on usage. Check web for "outboard motor water pump replacement" for all kinds of instructions and photos. I believe most all motors have very similar water pump systems with just a few differences between models. They do recommend a special waterproof outboard motor spline grease that comes in a tube. Quicksilver has a grease that I bought and is high recommended for it's extreme waterproof qualities, about $10/tube, probably last you forever. Also,a couple of 2X4's screwed into the top of your workbench, about 3" apart and hanging out the front about 18" makes a great stand to set your lower unit on while you're working on it. Good Luck!

One year if you are a fanatic

Two years if you are cautious

Three years if you don't mind gambling a little

Four years if you don't give a crap

Five or more and you are a dumbaXX
