1960 Johnson 40h.p.<br />Thought I was in the clear when I re-biuld my first motor and it fired right up.<br />(1st mistake).<br /><br /> After discovering it pumped no water Bear explained that when in a test tub the water level has to be above the PUMP, not just the pick-up. I should have know that the pump needed gravity fed water to get it started. Thanks for the tip Bear! Once I bumped up the water in the tank about 3" or so the motor was clearly pumping water. I popped the top on the thermostat housing off and the channels were soaked. <br /><br />But now comes the bad part, after the motor ran for about 10 seconds it died out. I thought it to be no problem but just a minor low-speed screw adjustment until I turned and looked at the motor. There was about 2 tablespoons of raw fuel pouring out of the carb. I don't claim to know anything about boat motors yet, but that has to be more than a minor issue. 2 days ago when the pump was not doin it's thing the motor ran fine. It only ran for about 3 sessions of 10 seconds but there was no raw fuel pouring out the carb. I am POSITIVE that I would have noticed that. Plus like I said the motor ran 3 different times two nights ago, where last night after the fuel spit up once, it spit up every time I tried to even turn the motor over. <br /><br />Has anyone seen fuel come pouring back out of a carb like that before? <br /><br />I pulled the low speed screw, the packing looks like its all there and the needle point is tip-top. I re-seated it exacty to the the manual specs: <br />Screwed it in just until it seats then backed it out a turn and a half, then tightened the packing nut. All lines are intact and secured. <br /><br />Any hints to get me started in the right direction would be great.<br /><br />Thanks guys, -Rooky
