C&P

WASHINGTON - A constitutional amendment to ban flag desecration died in a Senate cliffhanger Tuesday, a single vote short of the support needed to send it to the states for ratification and four months before voters elect a new Congress.

Re: Really Burns My Bucket!!!!!!

Much ado about nothing. Nobody burns flags anymore. At least not in the US. It's a blatantly obvious election year ploy to make points and nothing more. The Supreme Court would strike it down anyhow. Pointless waste of taxpayer money! When will they get on with IMPORTANT business? Somehow flag burning and gay marriage have taken center stage when we have Gee Willikers Bush redefining the presidency into a Tyrannical Monarchy and THAT's what congress should be worrying about. It's what we ALL shoud be worried about! Not some arcane idea that simply has no relevance in the US today whatsoever. Seems to me that requiring flags to be made with fire-retardent material would be far more effective anyhow. And it wouldn't take an act of congress.

To our senators and congressmen...
GET OFF THE SOAPBOX AND GET SOMETHING DONE!!!

Sorry Willie but I just have to weigh in on this. As an ex Navy man I feel that burning the flag is about the greatest disrespect anyone can show for all of the people that have died defending that flag and our way of life. I realize your hatred of W clouds everything else but I would think that any American would be appalled at burning our national symbol.

Just because something is done that is in poor taste, doesn't mean that it should be illegal.....
I agree that they wasted two days, when it could have been spent on more important things.....JK

You'd think we had an epidemic of flag burning or something.

It's just yet another crass political ploy to distract attention from the real problems facing this nation

If you want to burn an American flag you have two very clear choices:

Option 1 - We can get together and have a proper ceremony at the American Legion for proper destruction of a flag that should be removed from service. The Flag Code suggests that, "when a flag has served its useful purpose, it should be destroyed, preferably by burning." For individual citizens, this should be done discreetly so the act of destruction is not perceived as a protest or desecration. Many American Legion Posts conduct Disposal of Unserviceable Flag Ceremonies on June 14, Flag Day. This ceremony creates a particularly dignified and solemn occasion for the retirement of unserviceable flags.

Option 2 - Try to burn it in my presence in any manner that is disrespectful and face the worse suffering imaginable. I will hurt someone. Just a promise.

Flags from Iraq and other select countries may be burned for free and I will supply the matches and beer!

Well said Bob, I'll help. PW and JK, is there anything you believe in strong enough that you would be outraged if you wittnessed it? At least this is a more worthwhile ploy if that's what it is than bombing an asprin factory in the Sudan to divert attention from a girl named Monica. That's just my opinion of course.

If a liberal was in the White House and a liberal had proposed the amendment, all of the liberals AND conservatives would be all for it. PW, JK and all the other liberals here, why don't you just get over your hatred for GWB and all other Republicans. Don't try to tell us that you don't like GWB for anything that he has done. You didn't like him before he was elected for the sole reason that he is a Republican. What a bunch of phonies you people are!!

Um, the supreme court cant rule a constitutional amendment as unconstitutional.

I think all flag burners should be offered a free ticket to any other country. There are better ways to protest than burning the flag.

Only low class attention seeking fools would burn the flag. They seek only to gratify their own egos, rather than make an actualy legitimate protest.

Re: Really Burns My Bucket!!!!!!

Sooner or later, a case would come before the Supreme Court and they are the final say as to whether any law conforms to the Constitution. Depends on the particular case, but the talking heads seem to agree that it would be struck down.

You blind-faithed republicans like to make everything a Bush thing. Has nothing to do with him. This crap comes up every election year. This is the first time it came so close to passing.

BE OFFENDED at somebody burning a flag. That's Your right. I'm offended anytime I see any of our leaders burned in effigy (even Junior). Should burning a dummy hung from a noose be illegal too? If flag burning is made illegal, I want That to be illegal too. Let's throw in hate speeches, vandalizing federal buildings, calling the president a Dork. The words Nazi an Nigger should be banned too. Where does it start and stop and how long before Your rights are infringed upon? You have to take the bad with the good, like it or not, agree with it or not.

If a liberal decorated vet puts on his uniform and burns his tattered flag in reverence, what happens if his conservative neighbor sees this and reports him to the Flag Police. Is the burden of proof on the decorated vet to show that the flag was worthy of disposal? Hard to do once it's been set on fire, dontcha think? What are the criteria for destruction? What are the Specific requirements? Slippery Slope!

Besides, ban it and soon there will be an epidemic of flag burning. Protesters Love attention. They DARE police to arrest them for exercising what they percieve as their right to free speech so that it ends up in court. Lawyers line-up in the wings just itching to get hold of such cases and usually for free. The publicity is far more valuable than their fees.

PS. The president is a dork. The president is a dork. The president is a dork. ;)

I pick Federal buildings specifically to illustrate whether vandalizing one is worse than desecrating a cemetary or vandalizing a public park. I should've been clearer.

Re: Really Burns My Bucket!!!!!!

First off, There are lots of things I believe strongly in, and find reprehensible.

Mistreatment of children comes to mind.

I don't particularly find flag burning an attractive or effective practice either, but free speech is important in this country, and it matters not whether I agree with that speech or not, assuming it is carried out in an otherwise lawful manner, is sacred in this republic.

Just as everything else, there is a marketplace of ideas (or should be) that is dynamic. Good ideas will gain traction, and bad ideas will flounder. Flag burning is a bad idea that has floundered, and we don't need a constitutional amendment to tell us that.

Very well said Bob. Seems you have actually read the regulations concerning this as I have.
I however would not burn another countries flag either.
(yes I know how you meant that)
Burning a countries flag has nothing to do with "Free Speach" It has everything to do with disrespeck and hate.

I see iboats is back to normal now.
Time to go check in where people actually like each other! ;)

I'd be happy to burn Mexico's flag.

My oldest sons fiance' was just clobbered by a drunk ILLEGAL Mexican, that crossed the center line of a freeway. He had, no drivers license, no insurance, no nothing other than he was unable to stand..

It darned near killed her.

Since he's not a citizen, he'll walk. We've been told that they are "special".
.

Thank goodness for safety belts and airbags.
