Hi i have a 1954 evinrude fleetwin 7.5hp. 2 stroke. I just did a complete rebuild on it. head gasket, carb gasket, carb repair kit, impeller, points, plugs, wires etc. I put it all back together. put new gear oil in it and it is very hard to pull. any suggestions would be great. thank you.

Remove the plugs and see if it turns over easier. If so it might just be compression you are fighting.

Several possibilities:

1. Do you know how hard it is supposed to be? Those were more difficult than newer ones, due to the small recoil starter

2. Did you really "rebuild" it? Pistons, rings, etc? You may have screwed up the rebuild.

3. Most likely: The shock absorber is busted in the lower unit. That makes it expand and bind up. Age must be getting to them, they are popping up all over.

If that shock absorber is bad and expanded there is a way to fix it but it won't be a shock absorber any more. Don't know if they are still available or not. Last time I had to replace one the price was so high that I just fixed it myself. And, customer was happy. This was over 20 yrs ago. Let us know what is.

hi i did not do pistons and rings. the motor ran when i got it a few months back and it was easier to start. I did remove the plugs and try and start it and it made it easier but not like it was when i first had it running. thank you very much for your help.

Like F_R said , shock is probably busted, I had mine mig welded together, works good. I then won an ebay auction from a member on here who through in a good shock as part of the deal so now I have spare. When they break they usually take out the bearing plate under the water pump, that's the telltale sign that the shock is gonzo.
